Question about - sorry - anal glands Has anyone emptied their YT's anal glands and if so, how often do you do it? Mojo has been doing that sitting-down and walking bit the last few days. No troubles with pooping but still. |
I've never emptied them myself, but I had my vet check Daisy's last Friday and he said one of hers was full. She hadn't been dragging her butt, but occasionally I would get a wiff of something unpleasant and I suspected that's what it was. Since it was emptied, I haven't smelled it. Be careful trying to do it yourself and make sure it's necessary (sounds like it is) because I've read that once you start doing it, they will not empty naturally. |
I did it once for one of mine. (Yuck.) But it is not something that needs to be done very often. |

I'm a firm believer in "if it's not broke, don't fix it". Anal glands should empty naturally when they poop. I have never had to do them/or have them done on any of my dogs. Occasionally noticing a smelly butt may not be reason to empty the glands. Your dog may have just pooped or been startled and expelled a little bit. Just rinse the butt and see if the smell persists. If your dog is dragging or biting at his/her butt you may have an issue but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. |
Anal glands Thanks for your help! He doesn't smell at all but I read that when they drag their butts on the ground, the anal glands are full. We had a Yorkie for almost 14 years (she passed away in 2005) and I never emptied her glands. But I remember her groomer telling me that she had to empty them once. She was quite snippy about it as well. |
If they are having firm poos they usually express on their own. I have never had to express either of my yorkies anal glands |
Scooting is a major symptom of the anal glands being too full. You can tell by looking at the area around the anus, it will be slightly puffy. I believe you should have a vet show you how to do it, for if not done properly you can push the contents further up, and lead to impaction, a very serious problem. Joey had this problem as a puppy, but outgrew it. |
Mine only drags before or after pooping. He's obviously ok, so I haven't/won't do anything unless it gets worse. |
It could also be an indication of worms ... Does he get a monthly wormer? |

Chester has anal gland issues, and has to have them expressed every few months. I have to have food that is higher in fiber that can make a difference. I dont think all dogs express them and if it does not happen they can have serious issues if they are not expressed. My girlfriend once had her pom and her dog did not get them expressed and had to have them removed, because they got so full. |
