baby teeth...any ideas?? Today I took my 6 month old female to the vet to be spayed. Shortly after he got started, he called me to tell me that her baby teeth had not fallen out and they needed to be extracted, as she had what he said were like shark teeth growing in a second row (adult teeth coming in next to the baby teeth). He said 15 had to come out, at $17 per tooth! I about fell on the floor, at the thought of my poor little baby having to have that done! Originally I was asking if he could take her dewclaws while she was out, as the breeder never did it, and first told me it would cost $100, then this morning when I dropped her off, he told me $140. I could not afford that too, so I told him to forget that, I would keep them trimmed and keep an eye on them. What ticked me off is that I told him I would call him back after I checked on my finances and didn't give him the ok for the dews....only to find out when I called back 15 minutes later, his tech tells me he already did the dewclaws! So a $160 spay turned into a $600 + visit that i was not ready for. :( anyone else experience this retained baby tooth problem? I'd like to hear about it. |
Hot Rod had 14 teeth removed when he was neutered at 6 1/2 mos. He had the shark teeth thing going on. When I switched vets shortly after that, the new vet said that she was surprised that more wasn't taken out from the back of his mouth. He now has a weird thing going on, on one of his molars...I think it is a double tooth. He's due for his annual in November and the vet is told me that if it doesn't come out on its own, he will have to have it removed. I think he has had problems with it. I'm not very happy about having to do more dental-putting him under, that is one of a few reasons I switched vets. |
I think ultimately you'll be glad you got it all done at one time, there 's always a risk when going under anesthesia, but I don't think you would be legally responsible for the work that he did, that you didn't authorize. I do think the prices were excessive, and the range is closer to 5-10 a tooth, although the dewclaws seem about right, but I'm not sure because this was already done for us. I've heard of them snagging them on things when their older, and it can be really painful if they are torn. I think I would be tempted to find a new vet too. Finding a vet that you can trust is really important part of owning a dog. Most Yorkies have to have some milk teeth removed, my vet gave me the teeth in a little vial, I hope your vet did too, but I've never heard of anyone needing to remove that many. |

As best as I can tell, Abby has lost all but 3 of her baby teeth. She will have those extracted on Nov. 11 when she's spayed. I so wish they would come out on thier own, but no matter how many toys, chew bones, etc...she chews on, those little suckers seem determined to stay! The 3 that are being stubborn are her canines. I'm sorry you got socked with such a big vet bill. I agree with Nancy, I would find a vet I could trust. All the best to you and your furbaby. |
It's real common for Yorkies to have to have baby teeth pulled. I had done a fair amount of research (thru this site) so I tried as best I could to get as many to come out beforehand. I also waited longer than originally planned to give her more time to have her baby teeth fall out. As far as the price goes, it's all about the vet. My "spay" bill was higher than the original quote because I had teeth removed, a microchip put in, and her semi-annual check-up along with a kennel cough vaccine. But the total for all that was still way way way less than I thought it would be. You have to find a vet you can trust. Before choosing a vet, I went into a few different offices, and called even more. So far, my vet has done nothing to abuse my trust. Plus, everyone in her office loves Harley and Harley gets excited when I drop her off there, so that must be worth something. |
Mine had 4 teeth removed at the spay/neuter |
thanks, I feel better now.... You are all so nice...thanks so much for your comments, i feel much better now. He really is a good vet, good quality care but he just seems to think folks have a bottomless bank account. I remember when I took my fox terrier in because she had an ear infection, (it was a secondary condition to a thyroid problem that we suspected). He seemed really annoyed that her ears were all inflamed and waxy flaky bad odor type things going on. Well, I had had her to our other vet, who we love, but he admitted that he is basically a large animal specialist and wasn't sure what else to try for our baby. That is when I went to this other vet who we used before when our Lab severed some tendons chasing a wayward frisbee. He was great then too with that emergency, but we paid DEARLY. I am not saying I don't appreciate what he has done, but like with my dogs' ears, he said he was going to "teach me how to properly clean them" and then asked if I had a hemostat. When I said no, he grabbed one off his shelf and said "you do now". His way is to use a piece of cotton off a roll and hold it with the hemostat and clean the ears. I thought he was giving it to me, or that it would be about a few bucks, never mentioned the price..or if I wanted to buy it. When I got the bill, he had charged me $15 for it...and I know I could go buy one for about $3. He could have told me how much..I mean do I have to ask every time he picks up something, "how much for that Q-tip? How much for that piece of tape?" He just ran smears and things without first informing me what the costs were going to be, and then he expects I can just foot the bill right then and there with all the things he decided to do. I have worked for a veterinary hospital in NY when I lived there and there were 3 vets in that office. Not once did I ever see them do this type of thing, they always involved the pet owners of approximate expenses prior to doing anything. They were happy to provide an estimate, too, and a comparison...the bare minimum that needed to be addressed ASAP and then the top end with everything they would like to see done. And they always talked to you about it all first. It wasn't all about the wallet. I am very glad that I finally spoke up and told him that I couldn't afford everything that needed to be done all at one shot, but that if he would work with me on making payments I could do it. I guess he finally realized we are a good customer (after spending almost $5000 at his office in the last 5 years with our three dogs) and agreed to it. I really wanted to be able to have it all done with her going under anesthesia just once as I know that is the riskiest part of it all. Anyway, it is nice to be able to come here and get info from all of you and in such a supportive way....I wouldn't trade my babies for anything...and my little girl Tasha is just a joy too. thanks! yorkie hugs to you all! |
Tasha is doing good I removed Tasha's bandages from her front legs today and her sutures look good..she had a bath and a comb out and she's all pretty again...doesn't she hate a bath and a comb! |
tooth issue AGAIN two weeks ago I noticed that Tasha's breath was really bad, and I actually thought maybe she was poop-eating again, even tho I thought she was no longer getting a chance to do that....but her breath STUNK! today I had my husband hold her while I looked in her mouth...she has two large and long molars on the upper jaw that are crowded with smaller teeth behind them...and the molars have a greenish brownish tinge to them, like a plaque...and it stinks! I am really annoyed now as I spent a fortune with this dental issue and I thought he took care of it. I am worried that she is going to get sick and this needs to be taken care of. I just sent my vet an email and asked him if he would rectify this situation. If not, I will have to go to my old vet and have him do it. Gosh I am so annoyed at this! My poor little baby! |

wow! that is a lot of money per tooth....fiona got spayed last Tuesday, and she only had 1 retatined baby tooth, and they charged me 8 dollars for it....her spay went from $160 to $219! just hope that you dont have to do anything else surgery wise for your baby! |
dex had 10 teeth pulled when neutered so it is normal to have that done. Now the dew claws i will not have done as mine each have some and not an issue and vet from my maltese group said it is hard to do and many times the wound re-opens and they have to do a second time so please be very careful with that - a groomer told me to have my demi done but it was more of an inconvenience for her than demi as it has never been a prob for mine and they are almost 5 all 3 of them |
also best to do teeth now so no dental issues later and you do not have to put down again -- we paid $10 a tooth but that was 5 years ago |
