Karo Syrup in water to keep up sugar levels?? I was told by one of my friends that her mom uses Karo Syrup in her Yorkie's water. She said that they put a tablespoon in it once a day to keep up his blood sugar up. Has anyone heard of that or does that? |
Unless your Yorkie is having a hypo episode (low blood sugar), quick sugar fixes like Karo syrup, pancake syrup, Nutrical, etc. won't do any good. In fact, it can even cause problems. You know how eating a candy bar gives us a "sugar rush", then we crash and need a nap? The same thing happens to dogs. Eating a good balanced diet is the best thing to keep blood glucose levels stable. |
Okay well I will not be giving Chloe that. But I have been giving her NutriCal cause she is a very picky eater..sometime she eats, sometime she dont so I was told adminster that to her also. |

Offer her food every two hours, sometimes its finding what they will eat. I have one that I mix evaporated milk and canned food for her and she likes it warmed. She was having major problems that i was creating with the nutrical. I do not give her any of that at all now and NO PROBLEMS! She now also eats Boiled chicken and she picks at dry. Best of luck with your Chloe *I love her name* |
Thanks I will try that! The breeder had her on Proplan and this canned food called Advantage. She will eat the wet food but pick at the advantage. I then tried mixing it and it has helped. As far as Nurtical, I will be monitoring her on this...I have heard alot good things about it, but as of today on this forum I have not heard such great things..... |

Lady is an insulin dependent diabetic and the best way to keep her blood sugar stable is a good diet with both protein and carbohydrates. |
I'm confused about Nutracal I was told it is good to give this to them everyday, before they eat breakfast. To help ward off any sugar problems. Am I hurting my yorkies by doing this?? (and it was a breeder who told me this) |
Thats what I was told too. I am still giving chloe her dose until I talk to my vet. I think it keeps her going because she is so small and picks over her food sometime. |

to the OP ... we would put baby food on top of the dry dog food with our first yorkie b/c he was picky.. there is no need to stir it up just put the baby food on top and it will stick to some of the dry dog food. this worked very well for us. we used turkey flavor. we had 1 sugar episode with him before starting this and after we never had an issue. we do give them nutrical 2 times a day until about six months also. We did this as per instruction of our breeder. he has about 45 yorkies of his own and sells 60+ puppies a year for the last 10 years and only had to replace 1 puppy for a customer so we trust him. |
Thank you!! I will try the turkey baby food today. Also I am still giving chloe her nurtical 2 times a day also. I think it helps her because she does not eat that much.... |

I agree with the other posts. My vet told me that it was not a good idea for them to get used to "sugar water". He recommended using Nutrical if anything. |
