To spay or not to spay?? What are your opinions on having my fur pup spayed or letting her have pups? We can't decide if we want to let her have pups or if it would be better for her to just be spayed. She is about 4 pounds and the male would be about 4 pounds..that just seems so small. What are the ages for having pups or to get her spayed? Thanks for your opinions I just want to be sure I make the right choice :) :animal-pa |
Personally, if it were me, I'd have her spayed. For many different reasons, but my biggest concern would be for my dog's well being. I would scared to death for Abby or Daisy to have puppies. Also, take a look at all the rescue sites and see all the dogs that need homes. It's heart breaking to say the least. I did buy my youngest Yorkie from a breeder, but if I EVER get another dog, it will be a rescue or one in need of a home. I'm not an expert on breeding, but I think the male should be smaller than the female and I agree, 4 lbs is small. What if she has problems delivering? I wish you much luck with your decision. :) BTW, I have my Abigail scheduled for spaying on Nov. 11. and my Daisy is already spayed. |
Personally I would have her spayed! I too would be worried about her having a litter. Plus I've heard it gives her an increased chance with getting cancer. I'm so happy we spayed our little Daizy...she's 5 lbs..and it still seems too small. Good luck! |

She is too small to be used for breeding at 4lbs, there is too big a risk something could go wrong, regardless of the male's size. There are greater chances for some types of cancers in an female not spayed. Enjoy your little girl for the pet she is meant to be. Ruby was spayed at 13 months, right after her first heat. I would have preferred having her spayed before she went into heat, but was a little concerned about her size at the time, 3lbs. |
age to spay for most is at about 6 months. your baby is too small so i think it's in her best interest health wise to get spayed. if you try to breed her you can risk losing your baby as well as all the pups. also, i think it's always better to let experienced breeders do the breeding in order to minimize risks involved for the dog. |
Did you know that if you spay her before her first heat you will eliminate her chance of ever getting mammary cancer? If you wait until after she has her first heat the risk rises to 8%. It rises to 25% after her second heat. |
She's too small to have pups, it could kill her, and she should be spayed. I have always had all of mine spayed between 5 and 6 mos. The last one was less than 5 lbs when I had her spayed, with no problems at all. |
She's too small. Cancer risks increase the longer you wait. Further, going into season is an awful time for EVERYone concerned: hormone surges, temperament changes, all kinds of things. Your little girl's demeanor can change permanently: you risk loosing the carefree puppy you now have to - well, a bitch (with ALL the connotations!). And if the male lives with you, he goes through ALL kinds of grief. Besides, read some of the problems that occur during pregnancy and birth with these small dogs. Are you prepared for that? Could you handle a breech birth, or a stillborn? Look up what it takes to keep a baby with a cleft palate alive. Labor and delivery are not always foolproof: you could lose the puppies AND the mother. Bella was spayed at 5 months. She weighed a shade over 3 lbs. I dropped her off at 7:30 AM and my husband picked her up at 3:30 that afternoon. She came through it like a champ, no big deal. |

Lola has had 2 litters the last one was an OOPS. Its hard girl when they are in labor you got to be ready for things that might not be normal and even after the care of the pups is lots of work...They are cute thou. I gave Lolas last litter away to my very good friends that live near me. I could never be a breeder. Its just to hard saying goodbye. Lola is going to be fixed in 2 weeks. Also you want your male to be much smaller than your female. If not the pups may be too big...Good Luck on your discission. Just look at the Big picture before you think about breeding.... |
Oh almost forgot. If you have her spayed you need to find a vet that specializes in small breeds. Yorkies should never go under with just any Anastesia. I forgot the name of the Anastesia they need but it the one used on babies. Also their trackias could collapse if the vet does not know what he is doing..Please research..I use a vet in Dallas thats great with Yorkies....Good luck and maybe someone on this site will remind me of the name of that anestesia.... |
You need to know more than what the two breeding dogs weigh. A two pound male could carry genes from an 8lb dog somewhere in his bloodline. Same goes for the female. Two tiny dogs can produce large puppies. Breeders do a lot of pedigree research before they breed. They know the size, temperment and health concerns of every dog in a pedigree. They don't just throw any two dogs together. Many of the great breeders have taken college genetics courses and/or attend seminars on genetics. Unless you have a mentor (someone very experienced in breeding toy dogs) and a vet willing to be on call 24/7, you would be putting your girl at great risk. Before breeding you also need to find a vet experienced in C-sections with toy dogs. A Bulldog breeder in my area recently lost 2 litters and a female b/c she didn't seek out an vet who was experienced with C-sections. |
