Royal Canin Weight and Stone? Has anyone had any experience with this food? I got a sample at a pet show last weekend, and I'm looking for feedback. Olivia has had problems with urinary stones, so I am considering switcing. Thanks! |
I've never used that food but Royal Canin tends to make Yorkies very itchy (including mine). What type of stones are they? Were they analyzed? |
What were you using before? Did your dog like the sample? My dog eats regular RC for Yorkshire Terriers, and I've been thinking about trying something different. Joey's never had a problem with itching, and I believe it's the corn that is in some formulas that have that has been linked with itching in some dogs. The weight and stone formula has no corn, so that shouldn't be a concern. The ingredients look pretty good to me. It says that they have carried out over 14,000 tests, and guarantee that this diet induces urine that is "unfavorable to struvite and oxalate crystal formation struvite RSS under 1 and oxalate RSS under 12." |
royal canin hey. Walker is only 9 weeks old so we're still feeding the mini puppy royal canin, but he loves it. gets excited and slides around the floor when its dinner time. He hasn't had any itching problems. We're in Germany so i don't know if the formula would be different in the states and with the Adult formula, although i highly doubt it. Hope that helps a little.:) |
I fed RC YT blend for the few years. My dogs love it but they were all gaining a lot of weight. I tried several premiun foods. Spent many $$. i now feed Purina for Sensitive systems. they all like it and their coats look better(not as dry):) |

I was feeding this for quite a while I just switched to EVO....I went to an ingredients site and looked up every ingredient in Royal Canin and found about eight that where questionable or bad....That's if this ingredients site was accurate so I switched....This is a few I found on the bag and what the site said they where.... Some are... Corn gluten- high allergy, cheap filler..... Brewers rice- waste product from breweries..... Brown rice- cheap filler ( supposed to be "whole").....Dried eggs- cheap filler, waste product.... Dried beet pulp- cheap filler, waste product, where among the bad ingredients. Royal Canin also contained an ingredient that was called, sodium tripolyphosphate. When I looked it up on this ingredient site it said it was used as a preservative and is used on rancid meats and it is also used in laundry and dishwashing products and toilet cleaners. There was an ingredient in R.C. called,"cellulose" they claim it's harsh on the bowels and can include recycled cardboard or even peanut hulls..... |
Have you tried Hill's Prescription diet u/d? I know that it's not the most holistic food out there, but it worked for my Harley. He had both kinds, struvite and oxalate stones. We tried everything from making him homemade organic food to various holistic and prescription dog foods, as well as a specialty internist. During the time that we were "searching" Harley had to have 2 more surgeries, and ended up at emergency several times for severe bladder infections - it was frustrating because I felt like we were doing everything possible to prevent them from forming and it still happened! What finally ended up working for us is the prescription u/d and NOTHING else - no treats or any other food. We also got him a cysto every month to make sure that there were no crystals forming. I'm sure there's no universal cure - every dog is different, but it might be worth a shot :) |

I just switched from Royal Canin to Taste of the Wild. Its cheaper and better for your pup. |
1 Attachment(s) The weight and stone formula is a formula made for those dogs that have had stone formation and are also having trouble with their weight. Here are the ingredients to this formula. Here's the link. http://www.royalcanin.us/adx/aspx/ad...reed-adult.pdf |
Thanks everyone. She really liked the sample. Right now she is on Canidae, which is ok and she has been on Hills, which she didnt like so much. I have used RC YT before, but I didnt like the ingredients. I'll keep poking around. We have a checkup at the dogter soon, so I'll look into more options. I just feel so bad about the stones:( |
My opinion I used to feed RC Yorkshire Terrier 28 to my yorkie and maltese. The fact is RC uses cheap ingredients such as animal fat, corn, beet pulp (it maked Hanzo, my maltese, had terrible tear stains), etc. It also uses dehydrated poultry meal. The first ingredient is Rice. In my opinion, the first ingredient should be the meat itself ex. chicken, beef or fish (not chicken meal, beef meal, etc) because dogs are carnivore. Besides RC is not cheap either - price-quality. A good dog food should contain human grade food. Evo, Orijen, Canidae grain free which I believe are good ones. There are some other good dog food too like Solid Gold, Timberwolf, etc. I would not feed my yorkie and maltese RC, Eukanuba, Pedigree, Proplan, Hill's, Beneful, etc which use only cheap ingredients. We are what we eat, so our fur babies are. From my experiences, The breeders who feed their yorkies with RC, Eukanuba, Proplan, Pedigree, Hill's, etc, their yorkies face health problems in the future. Their yorkies usually die at the age of 10 to 12 yo (they are all champion dogs). One of Kenzo's grand grand parents was an International champion who died at the age of 10 to 12 yo. My breeder feeds their yorkies with those famous marks that most people use like Proplan, RC, Eukanuba. I can understand why most dog owners here in Europe who are lack of this information about by-product, beet pulp, etc only know RC, Eukanuba, etc. Besides, (unfortunately), we can't find Evo, Solid gold, Orijen, etc in the pet shop here in Europe. I order Orijen from the internet. We are lucky here coz we get tons of usefull information from this forum. I do believe if we feed our yorkies only best ingredients, they can live till 18 yo. |
