Not feeling well... Poor baby... So tonight I had to bring Deegs to see Dr. Vicky, our vet. For the last couple of days he hasn't been eating much lately, losing 1.25lbs and has diareha, has been very lethargic. Along with that he began limping this afternoon when I came home for lunch. I just thought that maybe he twisted it playing or coming down the stairs, but when I got home after work and I picked him up I heard a click that scared the crap outta me! That was it - we were off to the vet. Once we got in to see Dr. Vicky I explained all his symptoms and added that he's started going to daycare a couple weeks ago. She could say for sure if he had picked something up there or just by chance somewhere else or if it was the new food that was making him ill. She explained to me that we have the strongest shield that we can put around him (meaning he has all his shots, he's on revolution & has his kennel cough shot too). But dogs are just like humans in the sense that we can all have our shots, take our vitamins & still are bound to get sick once in a while. That made me feel a bit better in the sense that I can try and bring him back and if he gets sick again I'll know that it's the daycare. But we'll both be sad because he seems to love it so much. But she did give us some medication and food to try and get him feeling better. But then I told her about the clicking noise I heard when he was limping... the look on her face told me right away that it was luxating palleta's!! Ugh - my poor little man... he loves to go, go, go all the time. How am I gonna stop that without breaking his spirit??? The vet said to keep him from running for at least 2 weeks to see how severe his case is. This is gonna be hard to not let him run and play B-A-L-L! So just wondering how many other people's pooches out there have this and at what level? And whether or not surgery was needed and if it helped?? |
Sorry to hear that Deegan is having to slow down his playing and am hoping his LP is not severe enough to need surgery yet. I've got one with a stage 1 LP, though she has never limped and is now almost 3 y/o. I give her joint supplements (Cosequin DS) and am hoping we never have to face surgery. How has it been going trying to confine him the past couple of days? |

Ok, so his tests result came back normal. So we waited for the loose stool to clear up. It didn't and he's lost 1.25 so I took him back to the vet again. They did some wellness testing and all that came back completely normal, so we stayed on the meds and switched his food to some Intestinal stuff, and although he's been on it for about a week he's lost another 1/4 lb. He's even been going potty in the house, something of which he never did before all this. Sometimes he looks and acts normal, but sometimes I can tell he's not feeling well. I've been catching him eat his poop too!!! Yuck! He's so skinny and this is really making me nervous... And I blame myself because I'm thinking he may have caught something at daycare. We don't know for sure, but he was always healthy as can be before I took him to a few days at daycare. Needless to say he hasn't been back which makes me sad because he did have fun, but I am too nervous to ever bring him back. Any ideas what may be wrong with my lil' man? I'm bringing him back to the vet's for a 3rd time on Friday... I hope they find something or it clears up. It's painful for me to even pet him because I can feel his ribs, spine and hips pertruding out... But everything I feed him doesn't seem to clear up the diareaha. I don't know what else to do.... |
Do the symptoms of protein losing enteropathy fit? Ellie has the same issue but isn't too lethargic and isn't losing weight uncontrollably. It is really frustrating. It may just be IBD but her vet said that because we might have to go to prednisolone if nothing starts working soon (I still need to switch her diet...), she will push us to get an intestinal biopsy done because in rare cases IBD type activity can be caused by cancer . :( Have you tried probiotics? What is the protein source in his diet? Fish? |

The food could take two or three weeks to work (or maybe longer if he was allergic to his other food and that is what caused the problem). |
Wow, that is a lot of weight loss - what was his starting weight, btw? Has the vet ruled out hyperthyroid? While dogs can be hyperactive at first, they can then decompensate to being lethargic w/ hyperthyroid. |

It is always a good idea to check their thyroid, so it wouldn't be a bad thing to do even if your vet doesn't think that is the problem. IBD can cause weight loss. What is your vet saying if the probiotics and diet change don't work? |

You may want to get another stool test done. My son's boxer had coccidia, which caused weight loss, loose stools, etc. The first test nothing showed up, with the second test the coccidia was there. The vet explained coccidia is one that is difficult to diagnose because it's not always in the stool sample provided. Definitely check out what Crystal and Ann have mentioned but it may be something simple to treat like the coccidia. Especially since he acted fine until after a couple of days at doggy daycare. |
Thanks to everyone helping me out with this. We have an app't to see the vet tomorrow and I've written down all his signs & symptoms, along with what I've been doing and how he's been acting. I've also wrote down the suggestions and thoughts as to what it may be or that could be tested for so hopefully it will help diagnose something. It's so frustrating when they are sick and I don't know what's wrong. And even though everything has come back clear to date, it obvious and my gut it telling me that somethings not right. Hopefully I'll make some headway tomorrow, but in the meantime if you have anymore thoughts, please keep them coming. Thanks again to you all! |
