I also want to add, this sticky at the top of the Sick/Injured Emergencies forum: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...-your-kit.html , says that you should have Pepto Bismol in your "doggy first aid kit". While this is probably a good thing to have on hand if you own a larger dog, I was told to NEVER give small dogs Pepto. (I have no idea why now, but the NEVER stuck with me....) I would say Yorkies qualify as small dogs, so I'm wondering if the first post can be changed by the adminstrator?? I would hate something to happen to a dog because someone read that, made their first aid kit, then gave it to their Yorkie before they were able to get to a vet, and something bad happened!! |
baby asprin is ok for toy breeds, I have always used it, but you must be careful of the amount givin, I think that is what the vets are trying to say, my Dads lab takes one reg asprin a day vet says it helps his ackes and pains he is 10 yrs old but he wieghs 100lbs, toy breeds like yorkies should only be given baby asprin, because of there size, too much can kill them good post by the way, blessings:thumbup: |

Remember, though, aspirin is toxic to cats! |

Thank you for put up a sticky on this, my vet has always told me to use pepto and I always have, never had a problem, with either asprin or pepto, so thank you so very much, I do think everyone should know these things, Blessings :) |

And also: "Pepto should not be given to dogs/cats, it contains salicylate which can cause or exacerbate renal problems." "Salicylate is an aspirin derivative and has anti-inflammatory properties (NSAID), extended use can be toxic to dogs, especially if not given in the proper dosages, and are particularly contraindicated in dogs with liver and renal issues." I think the aspirin content in Pepto is also why it's toxic to cats... Bothe of those seem to only say it shouldn't be used in dogs with kidney or liver problems and you shouldn't give too much. Maybe that's what my vet read that made him advise me that way....I'd have to ask him to be sure?? Still, looks like maybe it is ok for healthy dogs!! Good to know! What about Immodium? I have heard of people using it for diarrhea in dogs, but I have never been told if it was safe to use or not (if you use the proper dosage of course??) |
My vets have always said to give a little Pepto to Lady for an upset tummy. Immodium is also safe for dogs. I think common sense applies. Always make sure you give the proper dosage and don't abuse it. If the symptoms don't go away in 24-48 hours, you need to see your vet. Here are the proper dosages for many OTC medications: OTC Medications |

Salicylate is not toxic, across the board, as the first quote seems to imply. Quote:

When I was looking for an OTC children's antacid the other day, I noticed they sell children's Pepto.....I bet that would be easier to use (dosage-wise) for dogs! I'm really glad to know that Pepto is okay, and Immodium too. Sometimes things happen at a really unfortunate hour, so it's good to know things you can do before you can get to a vet. |

Bella chews up the ones I've given her....seriousy, I think she believes they are treats!! But, I'm glad I know that I need to WATCH her chew them now! If she every stops chewing, I'll have to throw out the chewables I already have and get the liquid. Thanks again! |

If some people are worried about giving pepto, I've heard several say on here that a small amount of canned unspiced pumpkin is effective?! |
