how do you brush their teeth
 
Can anyone please tell me how to brush my baby's teeth? or how do you all brush their teeth? I tried and she just lics the toothpaste LOL thank you all!:D

Well, there is a few things you can do. YOu can buy a baby toothbrush, cat toothbrush, or a finger brush. I hope you are using dog made toothpaste as well! but you can start off by using a fingerbrush or your finger and just rub her gums so she gets used to it, and do it maybe once a week, and they gradually step her up to the toothbrush. :D

I recommend using dental wipes...they are basically a cotton pad (the one's I have are round and resemble the OXY or Clearasil facial pads you can buy) with baking soda, another dental ingredient, and mint flavoring. There is no way I could use an actual toothbrush on Bella (she so tiny, and she definitely wouldn't tolerate that...she'd probably chew on it if I stuck it in her mouth!). Since I started checking her teeth when she was little, she lets me "look" at them, and I just use the pad to wipe at least the fronts, but also try to get the tops, and last of all the backs of each tooth (depending on how long I can get her to be still)--I read somewhere that the inside and tops of pet's teeth get "cleaned" regularly by their saliva, chewing on toys, and even from crunching up dry food, but the fronts of their teeth aren't "cleaned" naturally. Supposedly, if you take care of the fronts, they take care of the rest! And Bella loves the minty flavor...she licks and licks the whole time I'm wiping. (I put her on her back in my lap to do it.)

awww thank you Bellah is so adorable! wow you use dental floss? ok i'll check the above out - also do you know at what age they get their actual teeth?

Thank you....I think she's beautiful (I really need to get some more recent pics...she has changed sooo much!), but I'm her mom!

NO, I do not use dental floss....just the wipes. Lol, I can just imagine flossing her teeth!! I have heard of people flossing their dog's teeth, but I don't think I could handle that!

I think they start losing their baby teeth at around 5 mo. (I may be wrong.....but I'm pretty sure that's when Bella started losing her's). One vet told me they should have all their permanent's by 6 mo., but another said by 8 mo.---that one also said to wait until 10 mo. just to be sure (she has to get a partial dewclaw that grew back removed later, but we're waiting so she doesn't have to go under anesthesia more than absolutely necessary!)

OMG, no! When she was 4-5 days old, the breeder had the vet remove her DEWclaws (the "nail" that grows behind the paw...up the leg just a tad...on both the front and back legs), but apparently he didn't get all of it! It looks so tiny and is so sensitive I think he just didn't get all of it, and part of it is growing back. I wouldn't even bother having him re-do it (since I've heard doing it after 4-5 days old can be painful to them) except that she's reeeeaalllly touchy about me touching there--she's a little better now than she was when it first started growing back in, but she's still jumpy about it. I'm guessing since only part of it grew back, it's just really sensitive?? And maybe since it doesn't seem to be the whole thing, it won't be quite as big a deal to have it removed as waiting until a baby is older to have them removed?? I don't know, but I hope so!

I'm so sad because my baby Leo has tartar on his back teeth and now its harder to get it out.
Theres no way he'll let me brush his teeth, he doesn't stop moving!!
What should I do???

You can buy teeth scalers for dogs. I got mine from Foster & Smith, and use them occasionally. They definitely work, but you have to scrape very gently. Even though I brush my boys' teeth almost every night, they still get a little buildup on their back molars. Between brushing and using the scaler, neither one has needed any dental cleanings.

You may want to gradually get Leo used to the toothbrush. As he gets older, he'll need his teeth brushed and the earlier they get used to it, the easier it is. :)

My vet also said to use a wipe like a cotton gauze pad. She did it at the office and I was amazed. I can't get a tooth brush or finger brush in my boys' mouths.

OMG, that's such an old post I'd forgotten about it!! :p I actually don't use the wipes anymore...I use a toothbrush (NOT a finger brush...I can't get very far back with those). They make double ended dog brushes with a small end and a big end, and I use the small end. I DO have to pull her cheek out by gently pulling on that hair so I can slip the toothbrush between her teeth and cheek. That being said, I think if the wipes are what you want to try, you should go for it!! The brush is working better for me now, but I did start with the wipes. I found the ones I was using at Petsmart (Four Paws Pet Dental Wipes for Dogs - Health Care - Dog - PetSmart) and Petco (Pet Food, Supplies & Accessories at PETCO -- looks like John Paul Pet makes some too!!), but I'm sure you could search for dog dental wipes online and find ones you could just order.
