stinky buddie :tongue019My Buddy stinks really bad - I clean his eyes daily and brush him regularly but his odor is really getting to me. He'll smell nice & clean the day I wash him and then after that his body odor is pretty bad. I heard that I should be doing something to his anal gland to help with the odor problem. Can anyone elaborate on this. I need help ASAP. Nancy Buddy's Mom |
hi my katie goes out side and comes in with a odor. its like a fishy smell. it drives me crazy! i have all of animals glands done now they dont have an odor. ive not had this to happen to me but i will check for you. tonia:animal-pa:aimeeyork |
I have never done ana glands. Normally they take care of themwselves. and even if it were the anal glands, it would not smell all the time, just occasionally. Try changing his food or his shampoo. I bathe mine on Sunday and they don't usually start to get smelly until Thursday. |
If there is such a bad odor, you should probably 1) change food and 2) rule out that he has a systemic yeast infection. What kind of smell is it? Like poo? Or a sour smell? Or fishy or? You truly should allow the anal glands to take care of themselves, as they should naturally - unless there is something structurally wrong with them. If you are feeding a food that is either poorer quality or if the dog is allergic, this can irritate the glands - so you'd want to switch instead of messing with the anal glands. Manually emptying the glands can interfere with the dog's ability to empty them himself which can also lead to worsening problems. Like I said, with a quality a quality food (and barring anything structurally wrong), there really should never be a reason to force a dog's glands to empty (except occ. when they have a prolonged illness). |
My mom had 2 cockers and about 2 or 3 days after being groomed they would start to smell rank again. I finally asked her if the groomer was emptying the anal glands. They weren't. After making sure they did, mom never had the stink problem again. I hope you figure out the cause. Good luck and happy thoughts. |
Chloe got smelly really fast during summer when it was warmer out, she also tends to get really greasy fast. This was probably the most muggy (I think that may be a Newfie term) summer we had since we had her. I'm sure she had way more baths than she desired this summer. |

Poor Buddy, how old is he? He really shouldn't stink, this is an indication of a problem. My guess is that the anal glands could be causing this. Joey's vet said that some puppies don't push hard enough when they poop, and don't empty the glands by themselves. For the first 4 months, he had to have his emptied, or he would start scooting around on the floor. There was never really an odor problem, but the scooting problem was bad, and he seemed very unconfortable. Eventually he outgrew this condition, and he empties his gland himself. Another thing that can cause a foul smell would be ear infection, and losing his baby teeth could cause bad breeth. If he's a little older, closer to a year, and his milk teeth haven't been pulled, a double row of teeth can cause food to gather between the rows, and this will cause an odor. All odor problems should be investigated to see what's causing it. |
