Very thin Coat! I havent posted in a little over a month because of internet problems :thumbdown.... I hope I can get some good advice on what to do about Shelby's coat!! Ive posted before about her thin coat and I was told that its normal and some yorkies have a thin coat that eventually developes.... but im going crazy now!! It seems to be getting thinner on the lower half of her back going towards her rear. She goes to the groomer every 2 weeks (for maintenance) and the groomer has also told me that her coat is too thin. She recommended that I change her food to something "Natural".... any suggestions?? I have also been seriously thinking about giving her a "puppy cut" to see if maybe her coat will grow back stronger and thicker??!! IDK what to do  Im afraid that if I go too short she will look "bald".... HELP US PLEASE!! |
what are you feeding her? |
She's been on IAMS PROACTIVE HEALTH for puppies up until a few weeks ago (she turned 1) and I gradually changed her food to Nutro Ultra. |
Switch her off of nutro. They have been having quality problems and dogs have gotten sick or even died from eating it. |
wow i had no idea.... so what do you suggest i switch her to? i want something that will be VERY good for her.... honestly, the cost doesnt matter. i just dont know anything about what food is good and what is not and i hear good and bad things about almost EVERY food i look up! id much rather get advise from you guys cause we all have the same breeds :) |
You should search dog food and you would get alot of good information. Some good brands off the top of my head are Natural balance, canidae, wellness, evangers, life abbundance, merrick. I know there are more I just cant think of them. You can find the Natural Balance at some Petcos. The rest you will have to get from a specialty store, a feed store or online. I would go to their websites and look at the store locator |
ok cool thanks! my lil bro feeds his Min Pin canidae so i know where to get that! thank you so much.... so could the food be the prob with her coat? |

i think you should post some pictures so we can see what you are talking about .. see if it looks like some sort of rashy area or if she is just a thin coated dog, and also, we can get a better idea of exactly how thin her hair is :) |
1 Attachment(s) Here is a pic I just took minutes ago.... its taken with my blackberry so the quality is pretty good.... but u cant really see what I can.... but right where u see the "flsh reflection" is where u can see skin through her coat. She just turned 1 on Sept 26th so Im not sure if this is considered her adult coat or puppy coat. I will post better pics in the evening ( i hate doing things in a hurry) i am going to pick up some food for her and some of the supplement mentioned above! thanks you guys and keep the suggestions coming.... i love this place  |
I cant tell how thin it is but I can tell you she has a silk coat and they are thinner than a cotton coat. I would change the food and give a suppliment and see what you come up with |

She may just be going gray and it just "looks" like she's going bald. Giving her a puppy cut will certainly make her hair not look as thin. |

I just returned from a family owned pet shop that I go to every once in a while, when i get Shelby something "speacial".... The owners are also Yorkie owners and I showed them some pics of Shelby and they referred me to "Evo" brand dog food. They also told me that I should try stopping the 2 week maintenance groomings and try a "once a month" basis for her and see how that works.... Im still open to more suggestions and advise so please keep it coming. I am also going to post some "past and present" pics of Shelby's coat. |
2 Attachment(s) Me again! I just wanted to post the pics of Shelby's coat.... First pic was taken in August ( a little more than 2mths ago) Second pic was taken about an hour ago. |
Roxie has a pretty thin coat as well. She's now 1 1/2 and it's finaly started to thicken up around her bottom. My groomer even said she is pretty thin compared to some. It used to bother me thinking something was wrong with her. I feed her Royal Canine Yorkshire and she does well with it. She's slowly starting to get thicker. I think maybe some just take longer if ever to thicken up. I also scramble her an egg just a couple times a week sometimes only once. Not sure if that helps but I've always heard that eggs are good for their coats. Even if it doesn't she sure doesn't complain!! |
