Where does your vet draw blood from?
 

What way do your dogs get it done:

Cephalic (front leg)
Saphenous (outside of back leg)
Femoral (inside of back leg)
Jugular (neck)

Ellie's vet takes it from the jugular and she is really wiggly, so then Ellie ends up with a bruise and last night she jerked her neck with the needle in it, so it took a long time to stop bleeding. I think the neck is the fastest and easiest in small dogs and the cephalic tends to collapse but does anyone's vet take it from the leg?

Mine has always taken blood samples from their front leg. Depending on what blood test is being performed...there are times when using the jugular would be required.

Usually Ellie gets lots of blood drawn at once, so the jugular is the logical place but I don't like her jerking away.

Mine get it in the front leg. I would be nervous about them doing it in the jugular but I guess if they have to they have to

i know that cutie has ivs in front legs...she might have had it in her juggular because she came home with a bruise but i dont know

I went ahead and made Lilly's appointment for her heartworm test today since you suggested to do it sooner. The vet took it from her front leg. She jerked a little and he had to redo it but it's fine now and didn't bleed long.

we always drew blood from the front leg, jugular or hind legs...but usually hind for little doggies!

Cephalic (front leg) -- The last time Dr. Amy drew blood from one of my kids - it was little Hattie and she didn't even flinch. Generally the assistant holds my kids securely against their chest and uses one hand to shield the baby from seeing what is going on. I stand at their head and talk to them. Dr. Amy gets her business done quickly and efficiently and usually there is no fuss.

The vet I've used where my parents live draws from the cephalic. But my vet here draws from the jugular.

Oooo Crystal.. the neck really??? i'd freak out and so would Layla. They take her's from the front leg.

Yup. It is drawn from the neck in small dogs around here. It isn't a big deal IF the dog holds still.:rolleyes: I don't watch. It is done in another room.

Conner's vet draws from the front leg. Once, the vet tech was holding him too tight. The vet told her to loosen the grip, and the blood came out. Conner loves the tech but is not to keen on the vet. Wonder why?

FOR THOSE THAT THINK THAT TESTING SMALL PUPS FOR LIVER SHUNT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO

well i took my babies in to be tested and i was in the room with them first taking blood from the jugler was awful fasting just as bad!!!!!!!!!
taking 3cc from a 1.8 pound puppy uncalled for
now my result's well everyone passed with flying colors lesson to learn i lost my teaser he just never bounced back from the amount of blood taken and the stress of the test he passed away tuesday my heart is broken as we were going to keep him
2nd my little girl came home yesterday we almost lost her as well but she is doing better how can people expect testing done on such small babies they just do not know what the out come can be so now i have a vet bill way over 1000 dollars
i lost a pup almost lost a 2nd one held shot's off so they would not interfear with the testing i try so hard to do thing right but from now on it will be up to the buyers to test unless they want a 6 month old puppy never ever again will i put puppy's threw this i blame myself for trying to do the right thing

i am just venting here i am angry i have a very good vet who is very passionate about animals and she said she would never do it again unless they are sick and it is a half to that pups this age and size are just to small for this kind of test
on the higher note the other 2 boy's are ok at this time but we are giving special vitiams to boost blood building back and watching them all very carefully
and waiting on the necropsy on teaser to see if we can figure out what went wrong
HE WAS JUST TO SMALL FOR THE STRESS
so how can we please the public with wanting puppies tested but risking loosing them at the same time i feel as this is a no win problem
is this what being a good upstanding breeder has come to?
