Can Bully Sticks Make a Dog... Poop more? I gave my Yorkie my first Bully Stick tonight. Well just now, Buddy had an accident in the house. This was his first poop. I took him out a half hour ago for a half hour walk. He didn't do then. I know the lady at Petco said they can make the tummy upset and cause some vomiting. But I don't know if they can make his tummy upset to where he poops and has accidents in the house. Please let me know if you have had experience with this. Thanks, Keri |
He might have had the accident due to the fact that he's never had one before (bully). Was it diarrhea or formed? If diarrhea I'd only let him have the bully for short periods of time after waiting a few days for his stomach to settle of course. |
Chewing will stimulate a bowel movement. Once Buddy gets accustomed to chewing then his body will adjust and you can train him around his chewing sessions. |
It wasn't diarrhea but it wasn't formed. It was mushy. And very soft and gross. Not like his usual BMs. I think he went through it too quick. I cant seem to find a good chewy that works for him. Bully's seem to upset his tum-tum. You are not supposed to give rawhide. So the only chewy toys he has and likes are these toys I got at Petco that are rubber and shaped like a bone and ones shaped like a triangle. They bounce all around. They have holes in them and you stick treats in them so they have to work for it. So they play with it and try to get their treat out. It keeps him busy and he likes it lots. But I need more options. What do you guys suggest. I don't want him to just chew through a biscuit, I want something that will take a while and keep him busy, like compressed rawhide. Any ideas? |
2 Attachment(s) The beat alternative for chewing is shank or marrow bones. If you are a person who cooks - buy a beef shank - use the shank and make a soup or stew for the human family's dinner. Clean the bone thoroughly and give it to Buddy. They are about as safe as anything there is for our kids to chew on. Here are a couple of pics. I have a couple of these shank bones that are at least a couple of years old - when they get dirty, I pop them in the dishwasher and give them a thorough cleaning. In all the time that the kids have been chewing on shank bones I have had to throw away only one of them because of wear. |
That is a great idea. Thanks! Do you put anything in the holes. I saw something like that at the pet store and they came with beef filling and what not. But can you stuff something in there, and if so what. I was thinking no fat, organic peanut butter, but my dog does not like that. Ideas? Or is plain fine? And if they are plain is there a flavor after a while? |
My kids get plain bones, but you could smear some cream chese on the inside of the bone or perhaps some yougert. Anything that Buddy likes that will spread. I wouldn't use much though, 'cause it doesn't take much to spoil appetites. |
It's always a good idea to introduce new things slowly. Bully Sticks are mostly protein, so if he wasn't used to them then it might cause an upset tummy. What I recommend is just giving a bit at a time (1/2 hour, or maybe 1-2 inches no more) each day for a while until they get used to having them. Once they get used to them they should be fine. When Loki had his first one it was the same way, but he's been chewing them for years now and if I don't pay attention and he eats a whole stick in one sitting he's just fine. Also, if he is a puppy that might be part of it. Puppies are SO sensitive. Maybe wait a month or two and try again. |

What brand was it? Merrick Bully sticks are really hard, and they don't go through them quickly at all, it takes Joey about 1 week to eat one. There not suppose to be a snack, but a chewing stick. I would definitely look for something that lasted longer. |
