When will she lose her baby teeth? Hi everyone! My Tinkerbell will be 5 months in 4 days. I don't think she has lost any of her baby teeth yet. I play tug-of-war with her to try to help things along, but no luck so far. Should she have lost a few teeth by now? When do Yorkies usually start losin their teeth? Does her size have anything to do with it? She is just about to hit 2 pounds, so at 5 months, she is a bit on the tiny side (although she has gained weight steadily since I got her). Do the smaller Yorkies develop slower? Thank you for your help! Wendi and Tinker |
it just all depends..and yorkie are also know to grow out their adult teeth with the puppy teeth still intact...meaning they have to be pulled out by the vet... |
I really can't remember exactly how old Lilly was when she started losing teeth. Believe me though, when they start coming out, you'll definitely know it. I was always finding teeth on my carpet in our old apartment. I even found her playing with a tooth from time to time. I didn't have her spayed until she was like a year old and some odd months and she still had to have a few removed during her spay. |
I do realize that she may need to have a few baby teeth pulled when she gets spayed eventually. It just seems like she should have at least one adult tooth growing in at 5 months of age. Do any of you Yorkie parents remember how old your babies were when they started the baby/adult tooth change over? Thank you. |
Baby teeth! I just had my Dixie who is six months old spayed, microchipped and two baby teeth removed yesterday. I did not know about the teeth until the vet called me and said they should come out. He said it is very normal for some of the baby teeth in small dogs to stay in there impacted and said it would cause trouble later on if not removed now, so while she was under anesthetic that would be the time to do it. So I agreed. They called this afternoon to tell me her surgery was over and she was doing great and I can plan to come today, later this afternoon to pick her up. Needless to say it has been a long two nights since she has been gone. I have missed her terribly. As many pets as I have had over the years and my three real kids all grown now, I gotta tell you this one really did a number on my old mommy heart to see her go to the vets for a couple of days. I will be so anxious to go and get her tomorrow. Now the problem is how am I going to keep her halfway confined and no running or jumping for a few days after her surgery? My twin daughters each have a little male yorkie. One is five and a half months old and one has just turned 1 year. They have missed Dixie as well, don't understand where she is and will be so ready to play with her when she comes home. We will just really have to be careful with her. So now after I have gone on and on, just know that you hardly ever know that their baby teeth have come out. They lose them somewhere, sometimes can even swallow them. Don't be surprised that the vet may have to remove a few of them. I have read in here that so many others have had the same situation. Good Luck!:) |
Gracie had to have 6 of her baby teeth extracted... but I did hear that they loose their teeth from 5 months-a year... I could be wrong... but I thought I heard it somewhere... someone will correct me if Im wrong Im sure... ;) I always found Gracie chewing on her baby teeth... and playing with it... lol funny to watch them... good luck I hope you start finding them soon ;) oh and you may just have to check your baby's mouth every now and then because Gracies friend Toby I think was a little older then Gracie was when he lost his baby teeth... and his mommy didnt realize it until I looked in his mouth ;) |
Cassi's baby teeth started to fall out when she was around 6-7 months. I had her spayed when she was a little over 6 months old and had to have ~7 baby teeth extracted (b/c her adult teeth was coming in). After the spay, about a few weeks later her molars came out on their own. Now that she's almost 10 months old, she still retained her upper canines and it doesn't look like it's going to come out soon. Once she turns one, I will bring her back to the vet to have them extracted. |
Thanks for posting this question:). I was wondering about it myself. My puppy has all of his baby teeth at 4 and 1/2 months as well. Do you recommend waiting until he's older than 6 months for the neuturing to be done in combination with all teeth extractions? I'd hate to have him go under anesthesia multiple times. |
Thank you for your responses. It sounds like she is doing okay for 5 months old. For some reason, I thought she should have some adult teeth by now. My vet did say that smaller breeds tend to be slower in losing teeth and often have to have them extracted. It makes sense to wait until all the adult teeth have come in to get her spayed, so that we know for sure if some teeth will need to be pulled. I sont wsnt hsr going undsr anesthesia more than once. Then again, there are value health reasons to get a dog spayed before her first heat. I don't think I have much choice with Tinkerbell since she is only 2 pounds at 5 months. She will be too small to spay before her first heat. Wendi and Tink |
Holy cow! I don't know what happened to that one sentence near the end of my last post. It was supposed to say "I don't want her going under anesthesia more than once". Sorry about that. |
Hello my Harvey is 2 years old and has only just lost the last 2 of his baby teeth - about 2 months ago. He had 2 doubles at the bootom and i was really worried about them, i knew i had read on here that he would need to have them removed by the vet. Anyway we noticed he had lost one, them a few days later the other one came out - this is the only one of his baby teeth we have ever seen, lord knows where the others went:rolleyes: So though i had expected for him to loose them when he was younger, i just wanted to share our experience with you, as your baby could be the same. |
That's very interesting, Diane. I didn't know that was possible. |
