No Tear Production Hey there! So after adopting Kobe - we noticed this gooey greenish mucous in his eyes and we found out at his first well visit that he doesn't produce any tears. We will forever have to administer drops to his eyes at least twice a day. Anyone else going through the same thing? How can you not produce tears? I sometimes wonder if this is why his owner relinquished him, maybe it was too much for her to handle? I'll say this much, I saw him listed a day before I found him and she nonchalantly said that he was adopted. My Kobe was the very same dog that as listed on petfinder.org and same owner. Anywho, anyone else going through this? We received two referrals with the same outcome. He can see fine, we just have to clean out that gooky stuff each morning and before he goes to bed. It can get pretty cloudy for him at times and his poor eyes are always super red. I wish he didn't have to go through that! :sickie: |
Sorry to hear that. I had a dog that needed his tear duct probed to open it up as it was blocked. i don't know if this is the same thing or not, but once it was opened up he was fine. |
Oh I'm sorry your poor baby has to go through this, if Ladymom doesn't answer your thread, you might want to PM her, I think she has experience with this. |
Welcome to YT! If Kobie has Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS), then I think you could probably PM YT Member Ladymom. I was approached about taking in a puppy who had KCS the other day and PM'ed her and she responded with a wealth of knowledge. I forwarded the info to the owner of the puppy and she decided to keep him and read over the info I gave her. |
4 Attachment(s) Lady has KCS (dry eye) also. Has your vet prescribed a tear stimulator like Cyclosporin (Restasis) to see if he can produce tears on his own? Cyclosporin didn't work for Lady, but her opthamologist prescribed the new FK506 (tacrolimus). After a year, Lady started producing tears again! What artificial tears do you use? I have found Genteal Gel Severe formula to be the best. The key is to put them in constantly through out the day. I've attached a couple of pictures of Lady before and after she started using FK506. The result is amazing, don't you think? |
Hey Lady! Right now Kobe is on Cyclosporine and also on Gentamicin. How do I come about getting what you have? I would love any and all info you can help me with! :) |
FK506/tacrolimus has to be compounded and I believe is only available through an opthamologist. Can you get your vet to give you a referral? Dogs with KCS are prone to other eye problems like corneal ulcers so it's a good idea to have them seen by an opthamologist anyway. Surprisingly, it really isn't any more expensive. The office visit is a bit more ($65), but I found the tests and prescriptions to be less than my regular vet. |
Fantastic! I will be making a call first thing tomorrow to get him into an eye doc! Thanks so much!!! |
