Using Comfortis, what heartworm preventative?! We had a small flea scare a few weeks ago and I used Comfortis. It worked and I want to keep her on it but I have no idea what heartwormj preventative to use with it? I remember seeing something about not being able to use a certain heartworm preventative with the Comfortis but I can't remember exactly what it was. What heartworm would you suggest while knowing what Comfortis contains. Thanks for any help. |
The concern is using Comfortis with mega doses of Ivermectin. Heartgard, Iverhard, etc. probably don't contain enough Ivermectin to do any harm when given as a heartworm medication. To be very safe, I'd go with Interceptor. |
I use sentinel, it's a once a month pill..it kills fleas and is also for heartworm..nothing in it for ticks, but, we don't have a problem with ticks at our house |

I use Comfortis and Heartgard. My vet said that because the doses are so low that unless I see problems (i havnt) to continue using it. Mitzys about 8 pounds and does fine. I give them both on the same day and its been 5 months now and no problems |
Well, I'm hoping I get some more insight to this. Lilly hasn't been on a heartworm preventative since July and at that time our old vet gave her Revolution. We changed vets because I always felt very uncomfortable and rushed at our old vet. Plus, our new vet is closer to where we live now and he's really nice. Problem is, he carries basically only newly released flea & heartworm preventatives and THAT'S IT. He carries Comfortis (what we use), ProMeris & when I asked him this afternoon what he carries for heartworm he said some I word. Whenever I look it up all I come up with is "Iverhart". I've never heard of what he said before so I'm completely confused. I don't know if I should follow through or go back to my old vet who has a lot more to choose from . As of now, she's scheduled for a heartworm test next week since it's been so long since she's had anything. So... my knowledgeable YT friends, HELP!:p ETA: Ok, I just did a little more searching and I also found something else that I might think it was that he said... Tri-heart. So, it's either the Iverhart or the Tri-heart. Neither of which I've ever heard of until now. |
Ok, just confirmed by my boyfriend that the vet DID say "Tri-heart". Now, I can be better helped hopefully. Anyone else use this?!! |
The problem with new meds is that there hasn't been enough time to see how the general population of dogs has reacted. If you really want to use something with Ivermectin and your vet says it is okay, go for it. It should be okay but watch closely. I don't like Revolution because the heartworm protection from it is questionable and there "may" be a higher death rate than with Heartgard and Interceptor. Since you do live in Kentucky, you might want to get the test done now and start sooner than in a week to be safe. Any good vet should write you a prescription if they don't carry the medicine that you need and they feel it is safe... I think Tri-Heart Plus is about the same as Heartgard Plus but they differ in flavor. |

I worked at a vet clinic only until very recently. The vet I worked for is a younger vet and would not carry ProMeris or Comfortis. He said there had been many dogs have reactions and even died from these products. He does carry Revolution. Revolution works for smaller inside dogs. Although there have been some dogs it just doesn't work on. He also carried Frontline Plus. I use Frontline Plus on my dogs and I've had no problem with fleas at all. As for heartworm prevention, I've only ever used Interceptor and that's all I'll ever use. It's very hard for the dog to overdose on it. We had a woman's Maltese open and eat an entire 6 month supply. It never fazed the dog. As said before Revolution also prevents heartworms. ALTHOUGH we've had a couple dogs come in that had been kept on Revolution get heartworms anyway. |

Thanks for the insight about the heartworm preventative. I'll most likely see if he'll write me a script for Interceptor. Thank You! |
