Allergies/Benedryl I had a scare yesterday. While we were out for a walk, a tractor drove by and scared Hot Rod a bit. Right after that it seemed like he was not right. I didn't know if he had gotten scared from the noise or what; he could grasp his breath but he was breathing okay, if that makes any sense. Long story short, after an emergency trip to the vet, she thinks that it was reverse sneezing and that it could have been brought on by allergies. Maggie sounded like this when we first brought her home (she stopped making this sound) and vet couldn't diagnose cause we couldn't explain it but did say that her trachea felt fine. Anyhow, she suggested children's benedryl for Hot Rod. I'm really not one for medicines all the time. Does anyone else use benedryl for their babies? And if so are there any side effects, example-sleepiness? Thanks for your responses. |
Ginger gets benedryl when her allergies are acting up. But I never use it as a preventative. When I start to see symptoms, I give benedryl. It does help her a bit, cuts down on the inflamed skin and itchies. No medicine is 100% free of side effects. Ginger has never seems bothered by the benedryl and doesn't get sleepy. Although, I know others who have given in for plane trips to help their furbutt sleep...so what do I know?:) If it were my dog, I'd wait and see. If he starts to show other signs of allergies then give it a try. If you search here there are several threads that discuss dosage...as a matter of fact, there is one I'm thinking of, I'll try to find it. Good luck! |
There's a lot of info on this thread...although it is a bit confusing. How's he doing now??? Here's some more info. |
Hi, thanks for responding. He's fine now but has been kind of need to clear his throat/chest. He did have another reverse sneezing episode yest evening when we were out. Hubby doesn't want me to give it to him either. We're about to go out for a day trip so I am curious as to how he will be. Will update when we get back. The vet recommended 1/4 tsp for his size, 3.8 lbs. Vet Pets - Animal Hospital and Pet Store - Memphis TN last line of benedryl dosage - lol. lol, I promise I won't let him operate heavy machinery if I give him the benedryl.:p |
They can have so much benadryl per pound of body weight..I'm thinking it's 1 mg per pound..anyway, make sure you don't get the kind with tylenol in it, as that can kill a dog |
Hey. Layla just had some actually. Her itching was out of control today.. so i gave her what probably equals out to 1/2 tsp (it 3/4 ml... whichi 'm pretty sure is a canadian measurement) and it usually just makes her a bit sleepy. She may or may not puke tomorrow  sometimes it causes that for her if i give it to her on a empty tummy... so i made sure she ate first.. but she has a sensitive stomach. oh and i use the liquid, dye free kind. |
I give Tyson benedryl for his allergies. His vet said to make sure it's the no dye *clear* version. He's about 8lbs and i give him 2.5cc's. It does make him sleepy, but no more sneezies. |
Benadryl dehydrates and constipates, so make sure she's drinking plenty of water. |
Benedryl is very sedating. Lady can't take it for that reason. It makes her act like a drunk. She gets Zyrtec when her allergies are bad per her vet. |
I keep it on hand for emergency purposes....bee stings, or allergic reactions to vaccines..... |
I use Children's Benedryl (cherry flavored) on my dogs when their allergies are acting up... It seems to help them. I don't give them much... about 1 to 2 cc's depending on their weight. If you are concerned about sleepiness... give it to your little one at night. Best of luck! |
Mitzy has terrible allergies. I was giving her benedryl with no effects. So I took her to the vet to get a stronger medicine and he said benedryl actually only works on about 30% of dogs with allergies. Mitzy had no side effects but also it didn't help at all. If it helps I'd use it but if not I'd go to the vet |
