My 12 yrold Yorkie PANTS all the time.help! My yorkie just lately has started panting all the time. It drives us crazy. She doesn't run around to cause it, she could be sitting in our laps and pants. She also has some freaky skin things twice a year. Where she gets these small bumps on her back and scratchs at them all the time. We took her in to get a cortizone shot last weekend and it didn't work at all. Anyways, need some advice on the panting..worries us. |
Has she had a full geriatric blood profile recently? A thyroid panel? It's common for these older guys to have metabolism changes as they age. A thyroid imbalance, for instance, can affect body temperature. |
Wow...I hadn't really thought about that. We had her in just last weekend, I wish our Vet would have mentioned that. But of course they don't. Thank you I will ask them to do that.:) |

It's the best way to troubleshoot little problems before they become big ones. It's the key to longevity IMO. This is a good explanation of a geriatric wellness exam: Brogli, Lane, Weaver Alexander Animal Hospital Geriatric Pet Wellness |
:goodpost: Another thing to consider that affects older pups is that the circulatory system isn't as strong -- panting without exertion could be a sign of fluid build up in the lungs. Often well managed on a diuretic. |
