My Yorkie's being spayed on Monday--Vet said home w/no drugs???? My baby is being spayed on Monday and when I asked if she would come home on pain meds, he said most probably "NO." It's been a long time since I've been through this. Any advice from someone who has been through this recently would be appreciated. She is having this done by incision, not laproscopy. She will be coming home the same day. Andrea and Lacy :aimeeyork |

wow!? what is the vet, a super vet!? that is CRAZY!:eek: We used to send home puppies with anitbiotics for 7 days..? Did you ask if they are going to put on a "pain patch"? which is just a fentanyl patch to help with pain!? |
That is not uncommon. There are three schools of thought on this. The first is either dogs don't feel pain like humans or some pain is good because it keeps them calm while they are healing. The second is only give it if they really act like they need it. The third (of which I totally agree) is that dogs do feel pain (they tend to try to hide it though). The dog has just had a hysterectomy and they certainly better be given something to control the pain unless a medical condition makes medication very risky for them. Pain meds can also make them sleepy which is good. Think of having abdominal surgery with no pain meds. It would be about the same for your pup. If the vet doesn't want to give them, I'd go somewhere else. |
Im not sure if i agree with that...spaying is hard on the pup cuz they are all up in that abdomin wall!? maybe im wrong!? i would want pain meds....:confused::confused::confused::confused: :confused::confused::confused: |

If any vet thinks they are going to cut into my dog's abdomen without properly medicating, they are sooooooo wrong.;) |

I would ABSOLUTELY INSIST on pain meds - and I would call that vet office ahead of time to make SURE they know it. If they disagree - go somewhere else. I am totally against using pain to suppress activity in dogs, like some vets think. There are ways to keep your baby quiet - provide extra chews during the healing time - that helps easily to keep a dog in one place, quietly working at their chew. |

I can personally tell you that in both my girls when they came home they were hurting. I could actually see when their pain meds were wearing off...so if you vet says no pain meds then get another one. I had my tubes tied by lapro and I was in so much pain...mind you I have a high pain threshhold so I can imagine they were in just as much pain. I am all for the drugs to help their little bodies get a little pain ease. Nothing wrong with it. I too don't believe that they should face the pain so it can keep them immobile. When you come home they are still a bit out of it from the surgery meds and are a bit quiet but as the night wore on my girls wanted to walk around and just be cuddled and I could see their wincing from their surgical site. |
I would call the vet & confirm that they won't be giving pain meds. If they aren't I would really consider going to another vet. Both my girls were spade and came home on a combo pain med & antibiotic for 7 days. They also had teeth pulled and were microchipped at the same time but that should not make a difference. Can you imagine not having any pain meds after surgery?? yikes...I had a hysterectomy and cannot even imagine no pain meds... |
