luxating patella?
 
I think my little boy may have this. For the past few weeks once a week or so when he would come to the door he would act lame on his back left leg. I thought maybe he had slept on it funny. After a few minutes he'd go back to normal. This week it seems to be happening more frequently. He went to the vet tuesday & got shots. Then we took him out to my moms farm to play & he played hard. Since then he acts like he doesn't feel good & just wants to sleep all the time. Last night he had been sleeping on the couch with my husband & when he got up he wouldn't put his left leg down & wouldn't jump up on couches. He limped around for a few minutes & then it was fine. It seems to only happen right after he gets up from sleeping, not while running or anything. I'm just really concerned. He's a very active boy & he's big, he was 13.5 when he went to the vet. He'll be 4 years old in May. If I need to do something I want to do it right away so as not to cause him additional pain & problems.

I would take him to the vet and tell him/her your concerns. They can feel the legs and know in 2 seconds if they have LP. Lily had Lp and she showed the same symptoms that you are describing.

Sorry your little one is having problems.....It could be legge perthes (hip) or luxating patellas (knee), only an xray will tell you....Good luck....

Im so sorry about your yorkie's leg. Please take him to the vets. So it won't get worse just like you say.

Aww he is so cute he looks just like my yorkie "Scooter"!

Layla has LP and you can actually feel it yourself... if you try to move his legs up and down, you can feel if the knee cap is slipping.. that being said he should still go to the vet to see what stage its at.

I have an appointment today at 3. His limping got worse friday, but he barely limped at all saturday & sunday. I felt all around his leg & compared the two & I don't feel anything out of the ordinary in his knee. He did act like it hurt a little when I felt up around his hip though. It seems the limping gets worse the more tired he is. But my vet should be able to give me more information today.

I'm glad you are taking him to the vet today. He could have a luxating patella. He could also have torn his ACL as dogs with luxating patellas are more likely to do that.

Please let us know what your vet says.

Legges Perthes manifests itself usually between the age of 7 and 9 months of age.

There is a possibility of Hip Dysplasia.

The vet said there is a slight hip dysplasia with a flattening of the hips. She put him on anti-inflammatory & told me to try & limit his jumping. I need to call my vet & discuss in more depth. They got kind of busy & I was rushed out. I'm not sure if this is a forever thing that we'll have to deal with or if he's a little sore & he'll heal out of it with a little rest. I'm also looking into chiropractors & acupunture. Will either of these help the issue? He also already had muscle atropophy(sp) happening in the leg with the dysplasia. I'm hoping that if the anti-inflammatory helps with the pain then he'll use that leg & build the muscle back up.

Nothing short of surgery will correct this issue....The mild anti-inflammatory is to keep him comfortable and reduce inflammation.

Yes google it and read about hip dysplasia
I think it is a forever thing but what do I know
Please do as your vet says
I would stick to just your vet
I am not a great believer in chiropractors they can just
mask the problem
I maybe wrong but I think with a brace maybe? If your
vet suggest it but he may not
and
as your dog grows he will get better.

My 5 month old male has been lame since born. The other puppies in the litter were up and running normally and he would just pull himself around. He has very large knees(hind legs) and the vet cannot figure what is wrong with him. Have you any idea at all. He just drags his back legs around and can hardly stand to pee or poop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some puppies develop what is called swimmers legs and if not assitted.....by some kind of egg crate (out of foam rubber) or taping their hind legs together and pushing to help them get up on them.....they will remain pulling themselves around.

The large knees thing I've never heard of (doesn't mean there isn't a name for it). My suggestion is to have a Orthapedic surgeon take a look at him.

Thank you that is what I have thought it is since the beginning. I just thought he would get better by now. Do I tape his back legs together? We are going to go the the Ortho vet that is our next step.

I think if you do a google search, there should be more information on it. Let me do some asking around and see what I can come up with.

I'm going to get my x-rays from my vet & take them to the other vet I see for a second opinion. From what I've read I think it's odd that the x-ray he had in January showed no signs of hip dysplasia, but it's on there now. It makes me think he might have suffered some sort of injury.

1-Take your camera and make little movies of your yorkie pulling himself as you say on his back and pulling himself by his legs.

2-Don't massage or rub his legs or thighs and don't
let anyone else as he is sore there and rubbing and massaging on his hips and knees and legs may cause
him to become weaker.

3-Go to a differant vet show him the videos

4-Go to youtube and find yorkie owners there and show
your video on youtube you might get some insight of what is happening to your little guy
