teeth and diet question I have read that Yorkies often have teeth problems and need expensive professional cleaning. I am interested in hearing back from people who only give their Yorkie dry kibble as well as daily hard things to chew on such as bully sticks or greenies and no people food. Did you still have Yorkie teeth problems? Did your Yorkie still need professional teeth cleaning? Thanks, Bonnie and Cocoa |
I never brushed or had anything done to my 12 year old's teeth. I gave him the large size dried food, thinking that chewing it would keep his teeth clean and healthy. No problems until the last visit to the vet a couple of months ago. He now needs a professional cleaning. |
Wow, 12 years, that sounds pretty good! Did you stay away from people food too? |
My 16 year old Chihuahua ate nothing but real food her entire life and never had teeth problems till she was 15. I did not elect to have her put under just for a cleaning due to her age. |

Terriers in general are prone to have bath teeth. In my opinion its also genetic. Fiona's adult teeth are beautiful, Dry food is the KEY to keeping teeth clean and plaque free, chewing on things also help too. I am against pigs ears, but the breeder gave them to all her dogs, and they all have gorgeous teeth. So it really depends on what the parents teeth looked like. I will tell you that after working at a vets for 7 yrs they basically seem to tell ANY pet owner that they need teeth cleaning if there is a slight amount of buildup on the teeth---its $$$$$ for them. |
my moms 15 year old yorkie (until her last breath) had white shiny teeth! I don't know if it was genetics, or just the way she lived. She DID get table food everyday (well almost everytime my mom ate) but just a bite here and a bite there... toast in the morning. She ate dry food only (no wet), and EVERYDAY my mom would give her a milk bone! Hope this helps... |
While we're on this topic, I was wondering what the average cost of the professional teeth cleaning was?? I'm guess a few hundred minimum. Do you mind telling me how much your vets charged? |

I give mine a mixture of canned and dry in the morning and they had dry kibble all day. Plus they have various things to chew on and I brush their teeth when they get their baths. My vet told me that whatever I was doing to keep doing it. |
Cost of Cleaning Had Bella's teeth cleaned today . . . . $500.00! It was worth it though because Bella had been rubbing her snout on the ground like crazy, and scratching at her face. Come to find out she had a bad tooth, that needed to be pulled. Bella eats only dry food, and I brush her teeth once a week; but she still had a lot of tartar build up on her back teeth. Hopefully she will be feeling better soon! |
