Wolfie won't eat!
 
I need help with my 9 month old--he seems to have put himself on a hunger strike. He will eat NOTHING except a couple of his most favorite treats. I've tried Eukanuba, Royal Canin, Iams, wet, dry, it doesn't matter. If I make a game of feeding him, he'll eat a very little bit. This has been going on for 3 days now. Does anyone have any suggestions? Special recipes?

3 days is a lot of time for a small baby, i will get him to it asap. Is he drinking? Maybe you could try some homemade food? Meat or chicken? My girls never refuse chopped meat :). I would also consider (for the future) upgrading his kibble

well he is just playing with you... because you do "give in" (as we all would) and give him treats. So he knows he'll get them eventually. However, when Layla was young we had to hand feed her... for quite a while... and we did... But try a higher quality food.. that way even if he does just eat a little... you know it is all good stuff. try a food like wellness or merricks- they make a great canned food.

can you try giving him kibble in his Kong and use a big treat to plug it up so he has to work at it- Layla thinks her kibble is a treat when it is in her Kong... so funny

I had the same problem with my Baby Zoey when she was that age and after one day took her to the vet. She had a viral infection and her sinuses were blocked. The way the vet explained to me is that if they can't smell their food, they will not eat it. She had to be put in a nebulizer chamber 2x and then on an antiobiotic.

Isn't Royal Canin high quality? It's pretty expensive and was recommended by PetCo.

well... anything recommended by Petco tends to not be good.. id on't like it because it has corn which is an allergen... i woudln't buy anyting at petco.. personally.

He doesn't seem sick at all. He plays with our other Yorkie (who IS eating well)--he just doesn't want to eat his food.

it is relatively normal. They go through stages. However i would still change their food.

Oh.. well it's easy. Ok say you want to feed Wellness. Go to their website

Where to Buy

or Merricks- and find where you are on the map and see what stores near you carry the food. If a store carries either of these two foods.. they will also carry other high quality foods

And just remember when you are changing from a not good food to a good food... they might have loose poop for a few days.. and change VERY gradually!

Teething can also cause them to go off their food. Could it be that he is having trouble crunching it? When Gracie was teething I would put some kibble in a sandwich bag and take a hammer and crack it. Even though it was the small bites it still seemed as though Gracie was having trouble crunching it herself. She would eat it if I cracked it and not touch the kibble in the other bowl. When I saw her eating out of Boo's bowl again I knew it was ok to give it to her whole again. The only bad thing was that Boo thought she was getting something "special" and ate her cracked kibble before eating the food out of his bowl. :rolleyes: So for a few months I was cracking kibble for a 5 month old and a 6 year old. :p

Actually, Petco sells Wellness, Natural Balance, and Halo's now which are high quality dog foods. Those would be good options.

I'm the proud mommy of a picky eater. I actually mix in a teaspoon of cottage cheese with his food with some water...and tadaaaaaaa..he loves it LoL. You may want to give that a try? Or yogurt or pumpkin?
