heartgard questions I've just bought a new yorkie which is 5 months old now i'm wondering when can i start heartgard on her and does she need a heartworm checkup before i feed her any heartgard? and one more thing is, she is so small, she weight less than 1kg im wondering if i should feed her the whole dose of heartgard which is for dogs up to 25lbs or i can actually split it? im worry about the medication would overdose for her cause she is too small.. thanks for any reply :D |

All of mine had begun heartworm preventative when I got them at 3 months. Usually they are tested for heartworms prior to giving the preventative. I used to half the dosage of the flea medicine, but never did that with the heartgard....you may want to ask the vet. |
I just took Sadie to her 5 month checkup and they gave her her first heartgard chewable. They gave her the whole piece and its good for one month. I got a 6 month supply for about $32.00, I think. She weighs 5 lbs. I also registered her through their website in case she is lost. |
our vet told us a week ago that when I take Tyke back in 3 weeks which will be Oct. 20 and he will be 4 1/2 monthes old. well he said when i come back we'll put him on heartguard. We always started our other dogs around 3 monthes and he shouldn't have to be tested. hope this helps. |
You know, I asked my vet if I should worry about heartworms.. He told me it;s very uncommon over here, so giving Heartgard is completely optional.. Is this true? :eek: |

I have a 2.8 lb yorkie and she is given the whole piece of heartgard. They are given a test before they start the process. |

Mine were put on heartworm medicine as soon as I took them to their first vet appointments. Since your puppy is so small I would definitely get your vet's advice about when (and even if you need to) and get the correct dosage. I know when I lived in Alaska they have no heartworms there nor fleas so no monthly medications were needed. :^) |
I just bought a pack of heartgard...and I'm a bit hesitant to give my 2.5 lbs 5month old puppy a whole dose. Can it cause OVERDOSE? Anyone here has given their puppy Heartgard the whole dose? What is your puppy's weight and age? Any bad reaction from heartgard? Thanks so much :) |
The Heartgard chews can NOT be split up for smaller dogs. The medication is injected unevenly into it, so they could get all of it one month and none the next. I agree that it is a huge overdose but there isn't much choice. Even with Interceptor, it says it is for dogs 2-10 pounds but the wanted to be able to claim that it controls intestinal worms too, so there is 5x the amount of medication needed in one Interceptor pill...another overdose.:( |

My Jeter is a tiny guy, he is 1 years old and is 2 pounds 8 ounces as of yesterday's vet weigh in. He was started on Heartgard when he was 4 months old and he was only 1pound 4 ounces when started on the meds. He got a whole chewable tablet and he was fine and every month he gets his chewie meds and I have never had a problem with it. I did question if the dosage was safe for him at the time though and he went above and beyond getting the information for me to make sure it was safe to give him the full dosage. |

Chewable Heartgard, Yorkie won't eat Our vet started Tuck on Heartgard chewable but he will not eat it. I have tried everything , mixing it with food, using as a treat etc. Has anyone else had this problem and is there any other way of giving it. At the vet clinic I work at, we tell people if they start heartworm prevention before the age of 6 months, there is no need to test until the following year. If you wait until 6 months or older, you need to test first. I've used Heartgard for years in my dogs, many different breeds, with no problems. |
Yes!! Emmy hates it too. I've tried cream cheese, peanut butter, pill pockets. We even tried a hot dog which we would normally not give her. She did eat it in the hot dog but it upset her stomach. We work at it every month, but I still trust Heartguard because I used it with my yorkie who lived to be 16. He loved it though...... |
