Fleas!!!!!!!!! Freaking out!!!!!! I am totally freaking out right now! I just found maybe 4 or 5 fleas crawling on fiona's neck....i brushed her, and nothing else is crawling.....i had to go over to my breeder to borrow frontline from her...... what else should i do!? you think with me working at a vet hospital for 7 yrs i would know, but i'm seriously stressing out here!!!! help...please!!!!!!! |
This is kind-of odd BUT... bathe her in dawn dish soap (just be careful of her eyes!). It will kill off all the fleas at once. THEN apply the flea preventive. This is what I do... and it works! There is also a pill (can't think of the name) you can get at your vet that will kill the fleas that are on her. I'm sure you'll get lots of replies. When i found a flea on Mia, i went into the health forum and searched 'fleas' and found a lot of info. Good luck! |
well thats the thing, stupid me, already applied the frontline on her, so now i have to wait 4 days to bathe her....i just bathed her last week, and she had no red color runoff in the water, and i couldnt find them....ahhh...im so upset right now..... :(:(:( |

yeah, its called capstar, and arggg.... |
Well... you could always just bathe her anyway..??..frontline is waterproof right? I've also heard you shouldn't bathe them at least three days after but if you want to kill them off cuz your freaked... then I would just give her a bath and wash everything that she's had contact with, then you will be sure they are gone. Just a thought |
thank you! I mean, They arent on her belly, ears, face, just on her chin, and now im getting ready to vaccuumm.... i think maybe she got them from outside? i havent seen them around, i have no bites, and ahhh! this is so yucky! |

Yah..the Dawn dish soap works amazing!! I found out about it from other YT'rs. Kills those little suckers fast! |
dawn soap is the bomb! stupid me should have done that first.... |
Just be careful because fleas travel to their head when you bathe them. Cooper had them and I bathed him in Dawn and gave him frontline and we havent seen any since. Thank God!!!!! |

Im thinking she more than likely got them from outside, and she was an easy target because i've never treated her with frontline plus until right now...you think thats stupid of me to think!? |
well, i think the fleas are all off my little baby.... i cannot wait to bathe her tomorrow, and hopefully be done with the fleas.....since its getting colder out, they should be GONE! thank god for frontline plus! |

ok, so you think we should be good!? |
Hi, the Dawn detergent should be mixed with water, look into old posts for the "magical" formula. When bathing, start with the soap at the neck, this sort of creates the barrier so that the fleas don't hide out in the head. I have started using a shampoo called Mink Sheen, More Product Descriptions it smells good, it protects for days, it kills fleas on them. I also read a thread that said you can put 20 drops of lavendar, rosemary into a 16 oz dog shampoo bottle and you get great protection. Good luck. |
Flea Funerals Frontline you need 48 hours before or after a bath. It goes into their oil glands and bathing strips those clean... When you give your dog a bath fleas don't usually drown because thye have this nice like waxy coating overy their bodies and can survive...dish soap or any shampoo applied directly breaks down that waxy coating and then they DO drown...bad news? It dries out you dogs coat SOOO bad and don't get it in their eyes!!! Capster kills the fleas with mins to hours, some groomers use it to treat dogs, but it does not last. Comfortis is the new pill on the market, it is oral and therefore bathing is not an issue. Fleas are usually brought into a home by the HUMAN not the dog. Easiet way for your dog to get fleas is to be in contact with someone else who's dog/cat does have fleas, you catch one of those flea eggs (which are microscopic) and come home and play with your dog and the egg falls off...well those little eggs can live in your home wiht the right conditions up to 6 months with no food source... Vacuuming your home will help keeop down an infestation, change the bad afterwards:) I prefer Advantage, but there are a huge range of products available. just remeber that flea baths and dish soap baths only work for a few days, then they hatch... |

Capstar doesn't last, but Comfortis does is correct, however Comfortis (and other pill form flea meds) works by killing the fleas that BITE the dog and do nothing for stages other than adult (eggs and larvae), and don't kill adults who have not bitten you dog. I actually think they only sterilize the adult flea that bit, so it will eventually die without having reproduced, but can still bite several more times before it dies off naturally. Not a good product to use alone, IMO. If the flea infestation isn't very bad (in home or yard), treating the dog is enough to kill all the fleas. If it is bad, you'll need to spray to kill them or there will always be too many. You can test your home by placing small dishes of water throughout the house (I used white so I could see those little black buggers) around the baseboards. The fleas jump into the water and then can get out! Also, Frontline Plus kills adult/larvae/egg stage fleas, so if any of those come into contact with a treated dog, they will die! |
Adverse reactions to flea meds Holy cow! Someone posted this link in a thread as an adverse reactions reference site: Flea Products Here is a story I just read about using flea meds that contain permethrin (like BioSpot and K9 Advantix, but not Frontline): Bio Spot - Flea & Tick Control for Dogs - Consumer Alert That is good info to know!! |
Omg! I retract what I said about Frontline....I just read this: facts I'm torn now about what I should be using....nothing seems safe! And to think, Frontline Spray was originally marketed to use on head lice in children!! Sheesh....what are we supposed to do....? |

thank you so much! so, you think we are good!? i'll have to check that shampoo out |
I raised German Shepards for many years and I now have 3 Yorkies. The only time we have had fleas was when I took them to Ohio with me. Someone who lived down South said the reason I have no Fleas or Ticks is because I have Crape Myrtle planted all over my yard. I used Frontline the only time the kids had fleas. Crape Myrtle is a beautiful shrub. Blooms from spring until the first frost. |
They say frontline is completely waterproof, however, we were told not to bathe 4 days before/after applying it. Working at the vets for 7 yrs you would think i got the hang of this...!!!!! I do not use advantix because i have seen very bad things happen to animals that were put on it, and i have found that it makes the dogs really scratch even more since you put in down their backs, rather than by the shoulder blades. Thanks again! I don't think we have fleas in the house, my boyfriend let Fiona say hi to the neigobors dog who is strictly and outside dog, and I'm sure thats what happened, however, i was always told that fleas will not jump from their host to another....but who knows...all i know, is i cannot wait to bathe her on sunday to get it all gone! ha ha ha |
Flea Free Without Chemicals Hi .... Our Little Oliver is 11 years old and Flea Free... Thank God for that ... It is a frustration..but once u get it in check u can keep it under control... We do Not use Chemicals.. First we get a spritzer bottle with apple cider vinegar and water, 50/50... and a nice clean white towel...and a fine tooth comb and comb him out...u will see them disabled in the towel or dead... Then we shampoo him with Baby shampoo Lavender Then we make a spritzer of Rosemary and boiled water.. ( we boil the water and steep one teaspoon of dried rosemary,in a mesh strainer, in a cup of water ..let it cool as u wash ur bby) then rinse and pour the Rosemary water on or spray it on the hair of ur bby..leave it on and brush and dry ... Now u must also do ur home... we use baking soda and salt on the rugs ..let it sit for about 20 minutes and vacuum ..vacuum for at least every day for a week... and u can use ur Rosemary spray on ur house and patio area too.. We do this for many years now and NO FLeaS heRe...knock on wood :) and best of all NO CHEMICALS to harm our bby :) WE LOVE HIM SOOOO....:littleang Also to point out ..the chemical is absorbed into the oil glands ? then years later many dogs have lumps and bumps ? Many from the years of useage of these products ? |
