What is your flea prevention? So I'm coming to the conclusion that Frontline Plus just isn't working. I found TWO fleas  EWWWWWW! So what do you use and how does it work and is it SAFE. Thanks :) |
Uh oh, I've been using Frontline as well. So far, I haven't found any fleas...keeping fingers crossed. |
Well I found the culpret...I've been letting my kitty's go outside. They brought them in!!! But I still need a new product, I think. |
I have been using comfortis for 5 months and it works great!! I just stick it some cheese and she eats it. look up their website there are some precautions but I've never had any problems. fyi I battled fleas for months before (using frontline) I put them on comfortis and havnt seen one yet. I live in south georgia so fleas are year round |
We use nothing.:) Ellie is usually inside, so she doesn't get fleas often. If she did I'd just bathe her in Dawn but I know that sometimes there is no way around using something and in that case I'd try Frontline or Advantage. |
I've used frontline and advantage. They both worked but I think Advantage had less side effects for Otis. |
I use Advantage and I do a flea bath once a week. |

I found 1 flea on Lilly a few weeks ago... UGH! I washed everything, did the carpets and gave her a Comfortis pill. She didn't have any side effects and so far I haven't seen any on her. |
I have used Advantage for a long time, but am going to try something called RediCare. It's all natural and I know a few people who use it with great success. It's not as expensive and worth a try IMO. You can read all about it at Bichon Boutique - Harness Vests, Harness T-Shirts, Proden PlaqueOff, RediCare, MetaCare, MetaClean, Keys Soap, Angels Eyes, Chillybuddy Cooling Vest, Anxiety Wrap, Calming Face Wrap, bellybands, dog panties |
we have always used the Revolution as it has the heartworm and the flea prevention in one dose and i like that it is based on weight. some of the topicals are way too strong. All my girls except Princess are on the 5-10 lbs. dose. Princess is still on the 1-5 lbs dose. We have fleas and mesquitos year round in Texas so this works for us. None of my girls have ever had a reaction to the treatment and have never had a flea. They love being outside so i know they are protected. This reminds me...today is bath day and time for the Revolution since it is Oct. 1. :) |
I have three yorkies and we use two different vets. Emmy and Lucy use Sentinel and I am quite pleased with it. It seems to be working just fine. Alyssa has very sensitive skin. She was miserable each month when I used Frontline Plus on her. She would whine, bite her skin and scratch. Finally, I just quite using anything but Dawn soap. I decided it was too harsh on her skin. When we went to the vet I brought up the subject. She suggested Comfortis. OMG! What a find! It is based on the capstar principle but instead of working for one day to kill the fleas the Comfortis works for a month. It is beef flavored and my Alyssa thinks it is a treat. I don't even have to hide it in chese. She did go over the possibility of side effects but I have been using it here in Georgia for 3 months and so far we have been fine. If she does get fleas while on the Comfortis the vet said we could use the capstar which would kill them. I had to use something different with Alyssa as it was killing me to see her so miserable for 3 or 4 days after the Frontline Plus. |
I use advantix K9 for Duke since May. I recently found bite marks on him and the vet doesn't know what bit him, and we didn't find any ticks or flea on him. So I have no idea if I should stay on it? Also, until what month are we supposed to have them on the prevention? This is Duke and mine first fall together. |

if your kitties are outdoor you should be using Revoulotion on them! (sorry i cant spell! ) you may want to put your dogs on it as well! |
I have allways used Frontline plus and never had a problem, but have to say, i have never seen aflea on either of mine, so i only use it during the summer months, this yr i only used it twice, and we live out in the country and do spend alot of time outside, i guess we are lucky...:) |

I use Revolutiona and swear by it! Never had a problem with it - just make sure the proper dosage it used. It's an all in one and does the following: Prevents heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) disease Kills adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and prevents their eggs from hatching Treats and controls ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) Treats and controls sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) Controls American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) infestations heartworm Revolution (selamectin) stops fleas and prevents heartworms. |
You should get a topical flea treatment for the cats. My vet told me that sometimes the flea medications will make little yorkies sick. Luckily I have a bigger (45 lb.) terrier mix, so she gets advantage and it seems to keep all the fleas off of Teddy as well. I had a cat years ago that was allergic to fleas and we had them in the house as well. Tried flea bombs, dips etc. Finally got a topical from the vet and it killed all the nasty little things in the house as well. |
We use nothing unless we are going on vacation or someplace where they will be outside in the grass a lot. |
What about during the winter...does anyone use flea prevention? Or do you stop for some time and then restart giving the flea prevention at spring time? |
I'm not going to chance getting fleas again due to Lilly not being on a preventative so I'm keeping her on it during the winter too. |
Comfortis Our Yorkie is very sensitive to the topical flea treatments. She is miserable after we put it on her so I came to this forum to find another solution. I would like to try Comfortis as it seems to have worked for several of you with your sensitive Yorkies. I went to the Comfortis website and I am assuming you have to get this directly from your vet? |
I use frontline on both my dogs and cat every 2 months during the summer and every three months during the winter. I vacuum every day and wash bedding once a week ( yes, I am a clean freak). I also put a dab on lavender and tea tree oil on their collars every few days and mist them with a few drops of lavender and tea tree oil mix with water. I also mist my furniture after I vacuum. I have not seen any fleas or ticks and my cat is outside 80 percent of the time, we back up to a large dairy farm and have a lot of trees and leaves. I only use the frontline every couple of months because my boxer is sensitive and I hate using any chemicals on them or have it near my family. I really thing that vacuuming keeps them away and I have heard that they can't stand the smell of lavender. It works for me! |
