10 month old Yorkie won't eat. Hi Everyone. I'm new to YorkieTalk.com and am looking forward to sharing lots of fun things about Yorkies. We have a 10 month old Yorkie, Maggie. She will not eat. The vet says she is fine...not thin. We have tried several dog foods, Iams Beneful, Science Diet...even tried a handful of cat food from the neighbor. Have given her a little human food, like chicken with carrots. She ate it once but won't eat it again. She even snubbing her treats! Takes them to her bed and leaves them there. She is highly energetic and doesn't seem to be in any distress. The vet doesn't seem worried, but we are. We are worried about the nutrition she is not getting. Should I give her vitamins? Is there a dog food that anyone might suggest. I would appreciate any insight anyone can give. Maggie is the first Yorkie we have ever owned and we really love her. Please help. Thanks, Tina |
Hi and welcome to YT !!!!!!! Unfortunatley the foods you mentioned just are not good foods. I highly feed and and recommend Life's Abundance Pet Foods. It is a great health food created by a holistic vet and the best thing is...mine LOVE it! I have no problems with them eating now and I can feed it to my puppies and adults! I even carry the canned food too. You can read about it and check it out here:Clothes, Beds, Healthy Food, Treats,
Grooming Products and Dental Care
for your Furbaby! | Pooch Potato Beds, Life's Abundance Pet foods, Dental Care And you can even order samples of both the kibble and the canned if you want or I even sell small 8 lb bags :) Its never been on a recall list and it made with all human grade ingedients! |
Thanks Thanks, I'm going to use the link you gave me, to go to the website and see if I can get some free samples. We're willing to try just about anything. Appreicate you taking time to answer. Tina:) |
I don't think you should worry (yet), as from your list I assume you haven't tried the "really" good food yet. Why not try: 1. Wellness 2. Merrick (I especially like their Before Grain line) 3. Nature's Variety 4. Honest Kitchen 5. Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul 6. Innova 7. Orijen 8. Acana (new recipe) I myself feed Orijen to both my babies. I have to tell you that My 2 year old shihtzu was VERY picky before. Mom fed her "bad" food when I didn't know better. Alpo, science diet, she didn't eat. She could eat maybe once in 2 days? Vet says fine cos she has normal weight and all, but when I switched to Orijen, she cleans her bowl every day :) Might not be for every dog though, it has high protein. There are many other good foods, one of them might suit your baby. Buy samples, or ask for samples from the company itself. I think you will solve this problem in no time :) |

Thanks Thanks Babz & marcerella02. You guys make me feel much better. I will definitely get one of these foods and try them. I remember the vet saying yogurt was good for femaile puppies and she does like it. I really appreciate your suggestions and that you have taken time to help. I really love this little pup. She's such a sweetie. :aimeeyork You're the greatest. Tina |
We also use the Life's Abundance. It is a fabulous all life stages food. It does have a tiny bit of the beet pulp in there. The benefits to dog and cats is well documented. I don't have a problem with it as it is a fabulous source of fiber. Here is an independent article about beet pulp: The Benefits of Beet Pulp in Pet Foods In summary: The addition of beet pulp to commercial dog and cat food is widespread, but the actual amount eaten per day is quite small. Beet pulp is rarely the only available fiber source; as a rule, a variety of fiber sources that cross all ranges of fermentability and solubility are recommended. In addition to being a good fiber source, beet pulp may have a slight advantage over some other fiber sources because of its benefit to the intestinal bacteria that help maintain colon health. Beet pulp is often found in many quality foods, and when fed correctly, is an ingredient that can be beneficial to almost all pets.My girls love this food and love that it is delivered right to our door. There are also no chemical preservatives in there which you will find in most commercial foods. Whatever you decide on, just read the ingredients and make sure there is no corn, wheat or soy and no by-products. I also offer it on my website since we love it so much!! :D |

Beet pulp has a ratio of soluble to insoluble fiber of 3-4:1; chicory pulp's is 1:1. It's no wonder that beet pulp causes slowed digestion (even fermentation and rancidity is reported). The 1:1 ratio is much more appropriate for regularity. Also, chicory pulp has a prebiotic factor (the inulin component) that is an advantage far and that of beet pulp. To me, beet pulp shows NO ADVANTAGE, and in fact a DISADVANTAGE for dogs. |

I would recommend feeding her raw. I sure don't blame dogs for not eating kibble either ;) I fed Nature's Variety raw medallions for years and have recently switched to prey-model...but they still get medallions occassionally. You can go to Nature's Variety to read more info about their products. If you really want to stick with commercial food, there are some good kibbles and canned foods out there to try. A friend of mine just picked up the Before Grain (B.G) kibble by Merrick to try on her picky eater |
Many thanks Many thanks to all you puppy lovers out there who have come to my aid. Every single one of you have given me "food" for thought.:) You've made me feel so much better about Maggie's picky eating. I appreciate all your suggestions and information on eating choices. I never realized there were so many different kinds out there. I'm emailing and writing for samples of as many as I can get and see which one is her favorite......as long as it's healthy. Reading the label is as important for doggie food as it is for people food. You are the greatest bunch of dog lovers!!!! And I thank you so much. Tina & :aimeeyork Maggie |
Have you tried canned food? |
Canned Food No, not yet. I was kinda staying away from canned food because I thought it would cause looser stool....but ya know....it may be my answer. Is there any brands that you would suggest? Many thanks, Tina & :aimeeyork Maggie |
