My yorkie was sick with Giardia please help! hello, I recently bought my yorkie Sammy, I thought I was getting form a good breeder, turns out she was a puppy mill breeder, anyway.... I ended up meeting a woman online that bought her dog from the same puppy mill. she told me to have my dog checked for Giardia, my dogs stool was loose and smelled really bad, so I went and brought a stool sample to the vet and it was positive. I had him on Flagel for 10 days ( sorry not sure of the spelling!) his stool is still very mushy. I am going to bring another sample and have him checked again. my question is do you thing he can still be positive for Giardia even after being treated 10 days? and what can i give him to harden his stool? he's currently eating wellness food thanks for all responses~ Cindy |
Giardia is VERY common in puppies, at least this is what my vet told me. Bella had it when she first started and they found it with a stool sample. I had to give her a powder mix in her food for 2 weeks or so and everything was fine. Giardia comes from water that either isnt cleaned daily, or water that is shared between many pups. After the 10 days, the medicine WILL work! Don't worry, I promise everything will be okay! Keep on with the wellness food, it's some of the best you can give a puppy |
he already finished his meds and the 10 days are up and his poop is still mushy.. what should i do?, do you know the name of the powder you gave your pup. is supposed to harden hi poo? |
Giardia can easily reinfect your pup if you haven't cleaned everywhere he has been with bleach water/disinfectant. Also, following giardia - mushy poos are not that uncommon for awhile, especially in puppies. Giardia can actually begin to digest the small intestine in young puppies, causing damage. Hopefully, this will not/has not happened to your baby. It did to my Marcel - and it took months to figure out and then deal with when he was a pup. Do you have him on a quality diet? THE most important things you can do for him now is 1) prevent reinfection, 2) get him on the best possible diet you're willing to do, 3) get him on probiotics immediately, to support the intestine. You also may need to do other things if the mushy poos don't get better and/or if he becomes reinfected and the small intestines go through another infection, but I (and others) can help. You REALLY need to clean the environment though - bc anywhere the pup has been, he has shedded giardia "cysts", which can reinfect him. |

This site has alot of info. Please read it all. There are many things that you should do to keep your baby from getting reinfected. Besides cleaning everything with Lysol, bleach and ammonium (bedding, toys, bowls, their clothing and them) you shouldn't take them out until they are totally clear of this. They can pick it up again or give it to others. Plus, you need to make sure you pick up their poop - immediately. Please us plastic throw away gloves. Oh, and they need to be cleaned up after each time they poop or the cysts can "hang around" their bottoms. And yes, Mia had to have 2 treatments for this, too. Not uncommon. BTW she is very sensitive down there now (intestines). We really have to watch her diet as she can get bad diarrhea from almost anything. In fact, we've had to change both the kids to the prescription stuff "Hill's I/D". Good Luck and post again if you need any other help! :) Giardia canis in Dogs |
Mascot had giardia for 3 months! It was nearly impossible to get rid of.... we went thru round after round of meds. His problem was he was also a poo eater as a pup, so he would reinfect himself at night when I couldn't stop him. We gave him forbid which was suppose to make his poo taste bad but that didn't stop him either. I had to stop working and stay home with Mascot until he got all better. I thought the day would never come! And the 1st time I saw hard poo I nearly did a cartwheel! After 3 months, and several bleached outfits ( I used so much bleach...my house reaked of it for months and my clothes and grass in the yard payed for it) but eventually he got all better. It may sound crazy but I have put the most work into Mascot then any pet I've ever owned, but I think I love him the most..... but we won't tell any of my past babies I said that. Good luck, and the key really is bleach bleach and more bleach.;) |
