Need advice for skin yeast infection I just took Minnie to the vet because she's been itching and had what appeared to be dandruff. The vet took a slide and said it was actually a yeast infection on her skin - yuck! He said that there were 2 ways to treat it - oral antibiotic or topical shampoo. He said he thought the antibiotic would be better since she was so little - the shampoo has to stay on for 10minutes before being rinsed off and he thought she would get too cold. So I'm going to have to go the chemical route, which I hate. Does anyone have any natural remedies they can suggest? - She already eats a grain free diet so I know it's not something she's eating that's causing this. |
Probiotics are supposed to help with yeast problems. |
Can I give her my probiotic or do I need to get special canine one? |
Which oral antibiotic, exactly, is being presribed? I'm very curious since so many antibiotics actually can cause systemic yeast overgrowth, so this is really interesting and would be very helpful to know for a lot of folks here. :) |
Been there.... Since Roxy has liver issues, we CAN NOT treat her skin/yeast infections with any medication. I use the shampoo. The way I bath her (so she does get cold) is like this. I wear pj shorts and tee (or bra and underwear :p) - And I actually go into the tub/shower with her. My shower has the wand/arm cord - So I don't actually take a shower myself, but I am able to shut the shower door and wash her in there with all the warm shower steam staying inside the shower with us ;) This works great! I also feed Roxy 1/4 teaspoon of Aloe Vera Gel (Lily of the Dessert or Valley - from the Vitamin Shoppe - for people consumption) - Aloe Vera is good and it works from the inside out  |
Sorry for the late reply. The doctor prescribed fluconazole - he said it's an antifungal antibiotic. He also said it's dangerous to give to small dogs because it has to be metabolized throught the liver, but that he thought it was a better option than the shampoo for Minnie. He also said that it could just be something that she's prone to...It's confusing because I know that a lot of times conventional medicine treats the symptom rather than the actual problem - I don't want to perptuate it. |
LOL, just got your PM too :) and PMd you back. That's Diflucan - and it's an antifungal. I would use it and I would KNOCK this yeast out while you're catching it early. It is a stronger drug, but it does work. This is the drug they use in humans as well; it is indeed tougher on the liver, but as long as your baby's liver is fine, it should be okay. Sometimes they also use Oral Nystatin in humans, but I don't know that this is an option for dogs. The nice thing about Diflucan (vs. Nystatin) is that it is usually a one-time dose (for acute, that is) vs. Nystatin. |
LOL! That makes me feel better - I had my vet do a BAT and blood panel on her last month and she was fine. I guess I'll go ahead and give it to her and then give her probiotics as an added supplement for the future. |

skin problems I have a little girl. Emma, who also has really itchiy skin and I took her to the vet..They did a skin scrape and found some sort of bacteria.. She is on antibiotics, and a special shampoo called hexadene and a lotion conditioner called resichlor. Also I am getting ready to do a short course of pregnesone(it has a special name for canine use.) its al so frustrating...I do have Emma on a completely grain free diet ....so I am diligently trying to help her feel better. She seems happy...she plays and eats but she itches sooo much and get really greasy even the day after a bath,,,, She is a real trooper.... Emmas mommy |
