Neuter the boy or wait? Okay, I have spent so much time worried that Zaccheus would live long enough to repair his cleft palate when he's fully grown, that I never put much thought into having him neutered. I just figured I'd have it done when he was under for his big surgery, and avoid anesthesia being used twice. So now I come to the forehead slapper. He is almost five months old, weighs about three pounds, and his sister (from a previous litter) just went into heat. Obviously I will have to keep them separated, but should I go on and have him neutered? I have no idea what age male yorkies go through puberty. I don't want him spraying or marking because he smells Roxy, and I definitely don't want there to accidentally be a breach of the separation and him to impregnate her. I have two kids, and even with the sternest of instruction, carelessness is bound to happen. So what if they forget and let them both out to potty at the same time? The final blow in this equation is that we are currently under contract to buy a house, and all of our money is tied up in closing. I would just put it on the credit card, but I cannot change our credit status right before we close on this house in the next three weeks. If I ask, my vet, who is a friend, would do it for me and let me pay whenever, but I hate to ask him for such a big favor. So I'm not sure what to do. And I'm not even sure it's an issue, since he's only five months old. |
Sexually males reach "puberty" at around 6-7 months. Generally males are neutered at 6 months of age. I would still keep them seperate or discuss the possibility of neutering him now with your vet. Perhaps the vet would allow you to place the cost of the surgery on account...and make payments that way vs charging anything to your credit card. |
Okay, folks, I've just talked to the vet. He wants to do it today. Actually, I wasn't crazy to wonder if being around Roxy would make him start marking. It is possible to stimulate him into "manhood," as he put it. So, I have to run. Zacchie is about to lose his masculinity. Tootles! |
Good luck Zacchie!! Even though my husband protests otherwise...none of mine have missed 'em. |

I just couldn't seem to stop kissing him goodbye as the tech took him back. They said they would call me when it's over. Meanwhile, I'm pacing.... |
I totally understand pacing....the waiting is AWFUL and you are a nervous wreck. Sending a prayer for him...and his mom. :) |
Well, before I went to bed last night I realized I hadn't taken Zacchie's water bottle with him. He can drink from a bowl, but he does better with a bottle hanging from his kennel. So I had a fitful night of sleep, woke up early and called the vet as soon as I was sure someone would answer the phone. He was fine, of course, and now he's home resting in his happy place. ::Sigh of relief:: |
