Feeding Question Ok, so I have yet another question! Tell me if you guys start to get bored of me, wont you?! ;) I already have a Chihuahua, Ellie, who I free feed but when I get my Yorkie baby in a couple of weeks I'm going to feed her puppy food and I dont know how I'm going to stop Ellie from eating it as well, short of standing guard all the time! lol :scratchhe Does anyone else free feed, and if so what did you do when you introduced a puppy to your household? Thanks for all your help guys, you're the best! ;) :ghug: Jess :heart to |
Ha! I had this same problem:) As my other dogs are larger their bowls are on a stand (they share, they're good like that and I top up as needed) so Mika couldn't reach theirs. I placed Mika's bowls in her crate (I got a bigger one so there would be enough room for her bed, bowls and pee paper) and propped open the door just enough to let her through but the others couldn't fit. I'm not sure if this helps you though as both your babies are small, but I'm sure your newbie little girl will be smaller than your chi for awhile so maybe this could work for now:rolleyes: |
You could switch Ellie (great name by the way;)) to an all life stages food and feed your Yorkie pup the same, otherwise free feeding would be too difficult. |
We had a 16 year old dog when I introduced the new ones to our family. Of course the puppies thought the BIG BOWL was theirs and would jump right in and eat. I had to put the big bowl, intially, up on books out of their way. I then switched to Life's Abundance and now they all eat the same food - I free feed them. |
Hey Jessbell you and I have a lot in common. I have a chihuahua who is about 16 weeks old and just got a baby yorkie, 9 weeks old, yesterday. I am currently free feeding my yorkie, Attli- just because I have read with them being so little and prone to hypoglycemia they need to have food & water access at all times. I also read at her age she is too young to really be on a feeding schedule right now, not sure how true that is. All I would recommend as far as mixing them or introducing them is to WAIT until you have your new yorkie vet checked. I was heartbroken and not pleased when our vet check today revealed Attli has ear mites!! Which def would be passed to any other pup in contact. My vet said the concern is not what your current dog will give to the new puppy, but rather what the new puppy might be carrying & pass to your chihuahua. GOOD LUCK!! :) |
