Want him to gain some weight I know that there are some other people that have probably asked the same thing. But I want to know a good healthy way to get my yorkie to gain some weight. He is just so bony and I don't want to give him something that isn't going to be good for him. He eats Artemis fresh mix right now and I leave it out all the time but he knows how his schedule was so he probably still eats the right amount. Just wondering if there is anything else I can give him to get him to gain a pound or two. a little advice would be nice so thank you |
Does your vet feel he's too thin? Has he had a good physical with bloodwork to make sure he doesn't have any underlying medical conditions that keep him from gaining weight? Being a pound or two underweight is a lot on a small dog. |
No he hasn't the vet he started out at and got his shots at they were kind of scared to even do anything to him they didn't want to neuter him because he was so small so I obviously stopped taking him there because they didn't seem like they knew what they were doing but I was planning on taking him back to the other vet for his teeth and a good physical. He is just bones you know its seems scary to pet him and play because you can feel all of his bones so thats why I was wondering. thank you though |

No we did not have any pre op bloodwork done. I scheduled an appointment for Monday for him to get a good physical and some blood work done so I will have to talk to them when I take him. |

I'm surprised your vet didn't insist on pre op bloodwork especially because he is so tiny. Most vets require bloodwork the first time a dog goes under anesthesia. I'd also get a bile acids test done. All Yorkies should have one done as puppies because liver disease is so common in the breed. A liver shunt could cause poor weight gain so it should be ruled out. |
All the medical concerns aside because they have all been discussed, i will answer the original question...A high protein food such as orijen is a good way to add healthy muscle and weight with very little fat. Orijen fresh 6 fish is a good place to start. Also remember your dogs may be small but need exercise, so walks are always in order...especially when feeding high protein diets. And of course...plenty of water.:animal36 |
