Vaccination Question- Over vaccinating??? I am in complete fear of over vaccinating Keoki so I wanted to get some advice from you- I am planning on switching Keoki to a holistic vet soon but in the meantime I think he may be up for some shots and wanted to make sure my normal vet isn't going overboard. my baby is only a year old and in Nov. he is due for DA2PPV Booster ( whatever that is), Bordetella Booster, Heartworm test and a fecal exam- then in 1/09 he is due for his rabies 3yr- any advice on what I should and should not do?? I am clueless and feel like my vet seems a little out for the money that is why I want the holistic vet next. Thank you so much!!!! |
I only get the core vaccines for my guys: Distemper, Parvo, Rabies. So, I get the DHP + Rabies (or, at the very most, DA2PP). I never get Bordatella. Here are a couple great links for you: Sounding the Vaccine Alarm Bell http://www.critteradvocacy.org/Canin...0Guidlines.htm |
After the initial first shots my Vet. doesn't give anymore for three years. I'm going to wait 5 years then just get the titer test to see if they need anything. Kennel cough isn't necessary. Mine have never had that. If you were going to kennel them I'd say get the meds. As for fecal exam, you can just take the feces in anytime. Maybe once every 6 months unless you frequent dog parks, then I'd say once a month for a fecal exam. |
Sounds like your vet is about right on schedule with the shots. This would be the first adult booster your baby is getting. After that, he should be good for 3 years, according to the latest protocols. The DA2PPv is distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza and parvo. The bordetella is for kennel cough. Some don't get this vaccine but if you take your dog to the groomer or have him boarded it may be required. I personally don't use the bordetella but I don't take my dogs around other dogs so their risk is very low. |
I am so grateful for your info- this vet seems like it is a money maker- I read the first article and felt better informed- I will not do the kennel cough shot and will only do the DHP if I have to but now I am having second thoughts about vaccinating next month - maybe I should wait- I guess I get worried because I am in New York City and it seems so dirty here but I will keep reading the other articles you told me about. I really appreciate your help- my sick sense told me the vet was over vaccinating . |
I do take him to the groomer so maybe that is why he recommends that shot??? But i know it is not required from the groomer and I never board him. Thanks for you info :) |
I had titers done this year. Is a little bit more than the shots but, they aren't getting unnecessary shots. Sadie probably won't even need parvo next year either. Her parvo is very high. |
