Will she have to have an anaesthetic to have her nails cut!!!! Tootsy is absolutely terrified of having her nails trimmed to the extent that nobody has been able to trim them for months now. I am getting desperate about it. The vet gave me a sedative for her and I took her in to have them trimmed, but, although she was stumbling around with the effect of the sedative, she was still able to fight so hard that three people could not hold her still enough for the vet to be able to trim her nails!!? What am I going to do about this. I have got her used to me holding her paws, but, as soon as she sees the nail clippers or a nail file, she runs for her life. She is so frightened by nail clipping that she runs from the room barking and growling, if any of us cut or trim OUR nails! I am at a loss as to what to do. Any suggestions? Luv Yvonne xx |
Mocha does the same thing. When she got vaccinated a week ago, I asked the pet on how to hold her firmly yet gently so I can trim her nails and paw fur nicely. The vet didn't show me anything radically different, but Mocha did stay still in his hold. He told me it is because Mocha knows I will let her go if she keeps struggling and that is why she does it. Basically he just told me to practice holding Mocha still for longer and longer at times. It makes sense to me, but I would love advice from more experienced members. I can only trim anything when she's very very sleepy, but even then she wakes up very quickly so it will only earn me half a paw's trim lol :D Love, Babz |
This is really a tough one for some dogs - and it takes a lot of time to desensitize them from their fear of nail trimming; you just have to keep doing it and doing it, hopefully with less restraint each time. I have heard of another member with the same problem who is now using a dremel (small power tool) to file down her baby's nails instead - and she says that once she got him used to the bit of noise, that the dremel is actually easier for him. I don't know that this is for everyone, but it's just an idea. |
My puppy was the same way. ( I had scratches all over my chest area), so then I had my husband hold him and cover his eye, and it only took the groomer less than minute to trim them. I now do them at home with the pedicure.. it took a few tries and now he just sits there for me. Once in a while he will put up a fight but in the end I win. LOL Good luck! |
Thank you all SO much for the tips you have given me to try. I will try them all and see if I have any success. I am really desperate to cut her nails. As you found, Yorkie in CA, you get covered in scratches!! I have heard about the dremel, but feel sure she will get freaked out by it. I will jsut have to have patience and put up with the odd scratch. luv Yvonne xxx |
Treat time. Hello My Bigos does not like it either but I do it right before his bath. My husband holds him and gives him treats and I cut his nails. You have to use the right instruments so it's quick. You can give him a treat he likes and make him nibble at it while you are cutting his nails. Not sure if you have tried this. Hope that helps. |
Thanks, anta76, for your reply. We have tried the treat thing but my poor husband still ends up with scratches all over his arms and I don't even get one nail cut! She twists her legs so much and so hard, that I am frightened she would actually dislocate her leg joint if I kept holding her leg. The vet tried to trim her nails with three people holding her and she was sedated, but they still couldn't manage it! luv Yvonne xxx |
