Why doesnt my baby like to play anymore...is it weight related?
 

I have 3 small dogs..one Yorkie, a yorkie, poodle mix, and one Maltese...the Maltie is 9, the mix is 7 and the Yorkie is 3. All of them just lay around all day...none of them play anymore. The Maltese never really played alot and she is old so I understand that...the mixed breed actually still has some spunk in her, but my Cinnamon who is the youngest has no energy either. I took she and the mix to the dog park on Saturday...all they did was follow me around, no running or playing. When we first got Cinnamon she loved to play, tug of war, chased balls, etc...now she does nothing. Other than allergies she seems to be in good health...she is overweight though but about 2 lbs....Could this be causing her lethargy? She actually has been like this though for about a year or more and I think she hasnt always been overweight? I have been home feeding them now for about 6 months...could that be it? I dont supplement them but I also give them a high quality kibble in the morning. I miss playing with my dogs...I was so jealous at the dog park, seeing all of the owners running and playing. Is this a Yorkie trait or do you think there might be something wrong or could it be as simple as the weight? Thanks for listening.

lexi is the same way,, she dont want to do anything but lay around and mope. some dogs arent as active as ive been told.. lexi was always like
that though, and it drives me nuts.. she dont even want to go for a walk.

Mine play every now and then but mostly lay around. I take them on walks to keep them active. Mine are almost 4 yrs though. The weight could be why she doesnt play as much

Two pounds overweight is obese in a Yorkie. That would definitely explain why he doesn't want to play. It also puts him at risk for knee and other joint problems, diabetes and heart disease.

I learned this the hard way when my Lady was two pounds overweight and became diabetic at age 6.5. She has to get insulin injections twice a day for the rest of her life, not to mention all the other issues that come along with being diabetic.

Please try to get your dogs down to a healthy weight so that they can live a long, healthy life.

Being that much overweight could contribute to her not being active. I would work on a slow reducing plan that incorporated more playtime/activity. Maybe more walks. A good checkup might be in order to be sure that there aren't some underlying health issues that are contributing to her inactivity.

Brownie is Going to be 7 in March & Still VERY active He loves to play around all day & enjoys running threw the yard with his brother's.

I don't know what her ideal weight is, but two extra pounds on a dog who should weigh eight pounds is like a woman who should weigh 125 pounds weighing 160 pounds.

Lady was two pounds overweight when she was diagnosed with diabetes. Then she had to lose weight. I had been carefully measuring the food I was giving her, but didn't count all the high calorie treats she got all day long.

Frozen green beans slightly thawed did the trick for Lady. For a treat I put them in her Busy Buddy Twist and Treat and she loved it!
