No Escape from the fleas- any suggestions? Hi All! I posted a few weeks ago about Oliver having fleas... and then tapeworms. WELL we dewormed him and all was okay for a day or so... until I noticed that the fleas were back. The first time he had fleas (2 weeks ago) I flea bathed him, sprayed the carpets twice with flea, egg and tick killer and put advantage on him... Since then I've done the carpets a 3rd and i think 4th time... given him another flea bath (yesterday) and I'm holding off for another week on the advantage (is it okay to give it every 3 weeks??) BUT I'm Going crazy!!!! I feel like i've tried everything! Any suggestions? Thank you! |
You just have to keep doing what your doing. You must have had eggs in your carpet and even though you sprayed they hatched later. Good luck I know its frustrating. Ive been through a flea infestation before a long time ago with my cats |
We used to have fleas galore. We started using Comfortis and all 6 of our dogs are flea free! It works! You can get it at your vets. It is a pill they take once a month. |
We've never had a problem with fleas, but I have read that you should be careful, where outside you take them because they can get them from just grassy areas. If it's only your own yard, there are ways to treat it. Also, people have said the change the vacuum bags or put mothballs in the bags to kill the fleas otherwise the just keep reinvesting your dogs. I'm not sure how long a flea can live without a host, but eggs can live a while. |
Fleas can build up a resistance to flea products so you might want to try another brand. Advantage isn't waterproof so you just wash it off when you bathe him. K9 Advantix or Frontline are both waterproof. You obviously have an infestation and fleas are hatching in your carpets. I've never had any luck with sprays. Adam carpet powder works the best if you can find it. You have to work the powder in with a broom. I had a problem last summer with fleas and had to switch from Frontline to K9 Advantix. I still kept seeing tiny little hatchlings until I treated my carpet. That finally did it. |
I do believe Advantage is waterproof, with Frontline you need to wait 48 hours after a bath to give it to them. Best way to rid fleas in your home? Vacuum!!! Kills 97%. Flea baths are useless, they rid you of fleas for about 6-8 hours then the larvae start to rehatch. Soemtimes you do need to apply Advantage every 3 weeks. Comfortis has been getting RAVE reviews!! |

Advantage is supposed to be water resistant, but I found it washed off Lady after her first bath. I had much better luck with K9 Advantix and Frontline. I haven't tried Comfortis, but I've heard good things about it. |
Vacuum! Vacuum! Vacuum! there is a stage of the flea cycle that cannot be killed with any product (unless you vacuum him up) they are pupae and wrap themselves in cocoons with deters the products. I had such a problem with fleas living in south georgia. I tried it all. was using frontline but my vet said fleas can become resistant to products and steered me toward comfortis. I will never use another product again. I've been on 2 months and havnt found a live flea again. ocassionally a dead one but they are killed before they can lay eggs. |
And vacuum again! Make sure, too, that you 1) put the vacuum outside for a couple hours afterward, and 2) change the bag or empty the cup if you have a bagless, because they can crawl right back out of the vacuum cleaner. Remember, too, that it takes a few weeks for eggs to hatch, so these could be eggs hatching from the initial infestation. Also, the flea treatment won't necessarily keep the fleas off. They can still get on your dog; they die from the secretion of the chemicals through the sebaceous glands. As others have said, you may also want to treat your yard. You can use pretty much any yard treatment, so long as it's used correctly. A lot of times it's best to spray it after a good, soaking rain; otherwise, you have to soak your yard yourself (to 1/4" deep) with a hose or sprinkler system. |
Just wanted to make sure you girls were not washing your babies in flea shampoo when you are using Advantage. If you are, that is why it is washing off. Our Bayer reps teach us to tell our clients to use a mild Aloe/Oatmeal shampoo and not flea shampoo or human shampoo. The Advantage resides in their sebacious (sweat & oil) glands and if you use a harsh shampoo you wash all the oil off their skin. Advantage is waterproof and when it originally came out that was one of its biggest selling points. But if you use a flea shampoo you are washing it off. |
