dog gone blind Does anyone know what might cause a dog to suddenly go blind. My yorkie is fine. But my Big outside dog who is 7 years old suddenly has gone blind. Her pupils are fixed and dilated. Could it be the flea meds we used a couple of months ago. (Comfortis), Could it be a disease...... I'm afraid for my yorkie who is vaccinated up to date but uses the same backyard. I am very sorry for Lady whom we've loved for 7 years and I dont know what to do for her |
Prayers for lady and also for you. Quote:

I am sorry to hear about your sweet girl! Does she have diabetes? She could have a detached retina or cataracts. Hope she can be helped. |
I had a Cocker spaniel go blind from glaucoma. One day we came home and one of her eyes was very swollen looking and bulging outward, and it seems like it was cloudy also. It's been many years ago so I don't remember all the details. I just remember it was caused from glaucoma, which is fairly common in Cockers. Despite oral medication and eye creams, she went blind in that eye, and eventually lost the sight in both eyes. Within a year she also went deaf. It was really tough on her to be both blind and deaf. Sometimes she would get lost in our yard, but she could still sniff out her balls, which she loved. She lived to be almost 15 years old despite being blind and deaf the last few years of her life. I suggest you get medical help for your dog as soon as possible. There's a chance he could recover his eye sight. It's unusual that he would go blind in both eyes at such a young age, especially suddenly. I would definitely be trying to track down the cause of the blindness. Best of luck to you. I sure hope your dog makes a full recovery but if not, he can still live a very happy life being blind. |
Diabetes can make a dog go blind almost overnight. So could a neurological problem. You need to take her to your vet to have her checked out. |

Diabetes as well. There are lots of reasons. Take the dog to a vet and ask to be see an Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist and then go look up blind dogs group at Yahoo. This group will be very helpful with info. This site was tons of info Owners of Blind Dogs JL |
I agree with the posters above, you should take her to the vet and find out what has happened. There can be many different causes. I have a blind dog, he is 14 years old and diabetic and has been blind for almost 2 years but it was gradual for him. Hopefully, you will get answers from your vet, please keep us updated |
