Neutering a small Yorking question Hi, We found our little Winston on this forum and was hoping to get some advice about neutering him. Winston is a 6 months plus now and a shade under 3 lbs. We would like to have him neutered but have concerns that his combination age/size might be problematic. Should we wait until he gets a bit older? thanks, Robert and Helen |
Hot Rod was 6 1/2 mos old and weighed just under 3 lbs. He came through fine. He was jumping off the sofa by about the 4th or 5th day! :eek: He did sleep for about 3 days after...he also had 14 teeth removed. None of his baby teeth had fallen out and he had a double rows of teeth. I have read that you should make sure of the anesthesia used...not sure of the name but I am sure that someone will come on and have that information. Good luck with your little one...he will be fine!:) I know it's scary. I didn't want to wait because I had read that they could start marking and spraying. He uses a pad in the house and boat so I wanted to try and prevent that. |
My Barkley was also barely 6 months and only weighed 2.5 lbs when he was neutered. I manage a vets office and we believe in pediatric spay and neuter. Just make sure to take all necessary precautions. Do a full pre-op bloodwork panel to make sure everything is normal. Most vets use very safe anethesia and have all the monitors they use on us humans. He should be fine. |
Same here...Cassiopia was 6 months when I had her spayed. At that time, she weighed 2.9 lbs. In addition to the spay, she had 7 teeth removed and was microchipped. I had no issues at all, she was fit as fiddle the next day after the spay. |
Does anyone know if "Sevo" is good anesthetic to use when they get spayed? |
Here is some info that I found previously regarding Surgery: 1) DON'T ever allow the vet technician to intubate your toy dog. Too many small toy breeds have had TRACHEAL INJURY and suffered and DIED because of collapsing tracheas from injury to the trachea during intubation. Make sure that the vet knows that you expect him/her to use the smallest possible tracheal tube to intubate your toy dog. Speak up! It could mean saving the life of your little dog. If the vet treats you like an "overprotective" Mom, find another vet that will understand. 2) Proper use of Ace Promezaine as a pre-anesthetic injection is ok so that the dog can be intubated. 3) Isoflurane is the anesthetic of choice. Don't use Halothane or any of the barbituates (see number 4, below). Some vets will "mask" a tiny dog with Isoflurane rather than use the injectable and so vets will not intubate at all, but this depends on the type of surgery being performed. This is an excellent method whenever possible. |
Isoflurane is definitely the way to go. Neutering is not as invasive as spaying and my little girl was spayed at 2 lbs and came through with flying colors. make sure you trust your vet and he is experienced with toy breeds! Good Luck! |

Lily is spending the night tonight....she got spayed today!! I am a wreck!!lol They said she is doing fine but I hated to leave her all night but there is someone there 24/7. The vet said that "her canine teeth aren't in yet so she can't pull all her baby teeth because her teeth won't come in right if she takes them out before her other ones come in"?? They also said "she needs a Kennel Cough shot and another shot I think called Leptospira"? I don't want them to "over vacinate her"... how do I know what is good and what is not? THANKS for any advice anyone can give me. |
What about neutering an older male? Shankly is 4.5 years old and weighs about 6lbs. Is it harder on them and do they stop spraying? |
Winston is scheduled for the neutering on the 22nd. Additionally - he will be micro-chipped and will have some baby teeth extracted. Oh - Winston weighed in at the Vet's office at a whopping 2.3 lbs! |

Lily is feeling better!! Lily is doing a little bit better!! She finally ate some broth & rice and kept it down and I didn't give her the "Metacam" anymore that they told me to give her for pain. I think that was making her sick too. THANKS to all of you for trying to help us out!! |

Reb was neutered and had 3 teeth removed at 5 months and 2.4 lbs. He did great! My problem was keeping him from jumping off the footstool afterwards! |
Lily is back to jumping too!! She gets her stitches out today. They want to give her more SHOTS?? "BRONCHISHIELD" today and "DHLPPC VACCINE BOOSTER" in 3-4 weeks???? She has had all her "shots" before she was spayed but a different vet spayed her than I had been taking her to for all her "PUPPY SHOTS" etc. Is this too many SHOTS?? THANKS.....I take her later today and I won't let them give her the shot if she doesn't need it!!! |
Without knowing what she had received on past vet's visits it's hard to say whether or not she needs more vaccines. I wouldn't give her the lepto portion of the vaccine (that's what the "L" stands for in DHLPP). I'm not familiar with Bronchishield and w/o knowing have now idea if she needs it or not. Take the vaccine records with you from your other vet. And, be hesitant to accept anymore vaccines for your little one.....it sounds as if she shouldn't need more (except rabies?). Some vets are really over-zealous in giving our little ones vaccines - more and more, the research is showing our pets are over-vaccinated. |
I did take her records with me that showed she has had her shots including rabies. That is "Kennel Cough" I think they want to give her today? "BRONCHISHIELD" When she got so sick after her spay and I called them and the vet said "I will give you the money back for the shot she had if you think she didn't need it"!! I think they give too much just for the money there and that is why I don't want them to give her anything that she doesn't need. The vet that I took her to since I got her doesn't give all that and says she doesn't need it. I would have got her spayed there too but they couldn't do it so I had to take her somewhere else and that is what happened. I am only taking her back there to get her stitches out today but I know they will want to give her a shot!! I have to take her on airplane in 2 weeks so I need a "health certificate" to fly her so that is why I have to take her too!! |
If she has had A set of shots every three weeks , three times then she does not need any more . She has had her Rabies shot, correct? You do not need to give the "reccomened" vaccines . Some of those, including the Lepto are very dangerous for the smaller breeds . whoever did the vaccines on your baby should give you the Certificate when they are completed. I have one for My suzi and was no big deal at all. I think it gets hard when you have to switch to a new vet, but if you have the records it still should have been okay. :aimeeyork |
THANKS EVERYONE!! Lily got her stitches out yesterday and "NO SHOTS"!! They charged me $17.00 for the "health certificate" to take her on the airplane!!lol I think they did that because I didn't want anymore SHOTS!! I won't take her back to that place ever again!! We live out in the country in WV and it isn't easy to find a vet that deals with little dogs. |
