Chloe's surgery yesterday luxating patella My little Chloe just got home today and had her one knee done. She also had a torn ACL and they had to make the groove deeper for her patella to stay in place better along with putting in a pin to hold it. That concerns me very much as the doctor said it is possible it could migrate if she accidently jumped on it or whatever to loosen it. Has anyone had this done and could you tell me how your post op went. I am giving her Metacam for pain per the vet but I think she may need it more than once a day. She is 5 pounds. Also giving her Keflex antiobiotic he says for three days for infection purposes. Any input on what to expect as it is one day post op. She is managing to go on wee wee pad and she is eating well so that is great. Do you think I could leave her in her pen by Monday for a few hours at a time. She is not that active to begin with and will probably just sleep as she does pre-surgery when I'm gone. Thanking all in advance for any help and advice. Very nervous mom! LindaC |
Hi i work for an orthopedic vet and we do this surgery all the time. Its true that the pin may migrate but its not from them using the leg once its healed. sometimes it just migrates. The metacam is a once a day medication, please do not give it twice a day. If you really think your dog is in more pain then call the vet and maybe they can get you some tramadol too. I had a poodle puppy go through three leg surgeries and never needed anything other then the metacam. By monday it should be fine leaving her. If she's a jumper in the x-pen then i think she should be in a crate, but if she's not then it shouldn't be a problem. She should be excersizing three times a day by going on short 5-10 minute long walks, very very slow Any questions feel free to ask. |
I know nothing about this subject at all. Just stopping in to send hugs:hug: |
glad the surgery went well and i hope the post op goes well too! LP surgery may be in our future and I'm glad to see another furbutt made it through :) Welcome to YT! |

Thanks so much for info. Chloe is doing much better today. I was nervous about the pin, especially after the bandages come off. She sometimes does a swirl and twirls around and that scares me too. I'm praying nothing goes wrong and that pin stays put and all goes well. She did well last nite in pen all nite and in morning she was feeling better I could tell. When I let her out I did see she wanted to walk too fast so I picked her up. I must put on a leash and walk her around for a bit like you suggested. I don't think the pen will give her enough walking exercise for her legs. I just thought it was too soon to do that. My vet said I could take her out to make but she does that on her wee wee pad. Thanks soooo much for all your advice! LindaC |
chloe's surgery Thanks for all your info. Sorry i replied in the wrong place. Not good with computer stuff. Chloe is doing better today. Was concerned about the pin migrating and will still worry about that as sometimes she does do a little twirl and swirl dance when she wants a goodie or two and possibly could do a little bunny hop which scares me also. It's not easy as you all know. With bandages she is still trying to do a twirl/swirl thingie. She is definitely better than yesterday and metacam I think will not be needed any longer. Thanks sooooooo much for your info. LindaC |
