Nothing will stop a determined hawk. Keep your baby close and on a lease while the hawk is around as more than one dog has been carried off. If a hawk can carry of a 7 lb rabbit it can take a Yorkie too. I only allow my fur babies out if my 16 lb Teddy is there to protect them from hawks and raccoons in our yard and we are in a city not the country. |
Oh wow, scary! I don't know.... You can buy owl statues to place here and there - but I don't even though if that's a deterrent....? |

Even a barking dog doesn't always stop a hawk but size will deter it from completing a dive. |

Did they have any advice about putting anything in your yard? Other than a Godzilla Statue? |
I have had two pro-football clients come to me with stories of their Yorkies being taken off by birds of prey (owls) when let out at night to potty. In both cases the woman of the house was out on the back stoop watching them potty when they had been taken. There is nothing that I can suggest other than being there. Put a bell on your dogs harness/collar has seemed to help in some situations. Also, teaching your dog a fast recall will help if you are out there with them. Shy of being there, teaching your dog a fast recall or simply keeping them on a leash...there really isn't much to do. You can ask your local wildlife center if they can come remove the hawk (some do) if it's just the one, but unfortunantely your options really are quite limited. If you don't mind, you could always create a sizeable fenced part of the yard that is covered. There are cat fanciers that do this all the time. |
I read to hang shiny things all around your yard, they dont like the reflections in their eyes from sun. |
If you have to, put a leash on them...I have a wall around our yard and I'm always looking up while we are out....Any sightings and we are in the house... They seem to be out from 10 am to about 2 pm...I wouldn't trust a larger dog to scare anything away, I think if it's determined...Can you put up a xpen (we made a little corral for ours to stay in when it gets dark (under our supervision-always) it would at least keep them in a radius of about 15 feet... And keep it by the door to the house too.... |
I don't know if it will work for a hawk, but I have heard that rubber snakes will deter birds. Don't know how a yorkie would deal with that though. Good luck! We have many large birds here too. |
I don't have any suggestions for you. I just pray that the hawk leaves your sweethearts alone and goes elsewhere. :hands: I can't imagine how scary that must be. :( |
It Owl will not work |
I live in the country and we have hawks too. They are very territorial and will come back for their selected prey. I never let Hannah or my 7lb. Chihuahua outside unless they are on a short leash right by me and then I'm still scarred. Pee Pads are the way to go. Once I had Holly (my Chihuahua) on my covered porch sitting right next to me and a Hawk kept cruzin by a stayed close in the trees. It was checking out my baby. They can come out of nowhere so please be careful. Usually they stick around in the same area. My sister has the same problem with a hawk that visits her backyard on a regular basis. She has a tiny dog too. I wish I knew what to do to keep them away. |
Just realized this is a very old thread. |
I thought an owl would work but only if it "hoots", like on a battery or electric powered. I'd check out a sportsman's center of some kind. |
