I Am Not Fat Just Fluffy Hi All I have a problem. My Yorkie, Daisy-Mae broke her leg when she was 3 months old. She Had surgery with a rod placed in her paw. 2 months later she had the rod removed. The leg healed well. I call her my $5,000 Yorkie. She is 3 pounds overweight. She is fed 1/2 cup of reduced fat Innova twice daily. Her treats are raw carrots. She is losing, but at a rate of an ounce a month. Should she be losing more. ????? She is not a small Yorkie. Her Mom and Dad weighed in at 9 pounds. I told the breeder that I cannot have a teacup as I have an American PitBull Terrier. When she is looking for more food Ozzy the 65 pounder will drop food in front of her. Help !!!!! I need advice Barb:eek: |
Hi! Well it's been about 2 months since you posted, is she still losing? My giant yorkies seem to gain easier than losing too. LOL, they act like I'm starving them. I find I have to exercise them (a couple of good long walks a day) if I want to keep their weight down. If that were only enough for to keep my weight down, we'd all be happy.;):D |
I am not fat just fluffy I am having a heck of a time with Daisy and her diet. She needss to weigh 10lbs. as this is what her Mom weighed. she is the larger size as I have a Pitbull. In 3 mo. she has lost 2 oz. I had to seperate the 2 dogs as after Daisy finished her bowl of food Ozzy the 70lb. Pit would move away from his food and let her share. She is on Innova low fat food. She gets fed twice daily. Total day feeding is less then half cup with either string beans or broccoli. Her treats are vegtables. I walk both dogs together and it adds up to about 1 mile daily. The Vet wants her weight down as when she was 3 mo. old she broke her leg. She had 2 surgeries. One to put rods in her leg and the 2mo. later to have them removed. The Vet recommended a product manufactured by ArK Naturals. It is a beef jerky with Glucosamine and chondroitin, as she had a severe limp. The limp is completely gone and the Vet suggested to keepm her on this daily,as it will be of great help when she ages. I am glad this happened before the economy took a slide, as I call her my $5,000 baby. Her orthopedic surgery was a fortune. But she is worth every penny.:aimeeyork |

Anyway, their main vitamin/mineral/antioxident formula recently was upgraded and they now make a supplement designed for joint care.. It's called Platinum Performance Complete Joint and contains Glucosamine, Hyluronic Acid as well as other ingredients that are designed to cusion and lubricate the joints.. It is awesome stuff. You might want to consider it :p Let me know if you want to try it.. |
Can you take her swimming at all? I think the more you exercise her (walks and swimming), the better it will be for her mobility and healing - and the weight will hopefully come off with increased, safe exercise. What about Cosequin? I'm surprised the vet didn't recommend that as it's really the only joint supp. that has published studies to prove its efficacy? That's what I give my Wylie. [amandawash - that one you rec. looks interesting too, has that one been studied, do you know?] |

The other thing I would consider for the OP's dog is a monthly shot of Adequan, which is an injectable joint supplement (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan) and has been INCREDIBLY researched and proven. It is actually stimulates the synovial membrane to manufacture new synovial fluid to replace the thin, degraded fluid of joint disease, within two hours, and if given regularly, will allow the joint to repair itself and stay healthy. "Adequan binds to damaged cartilage and boosts cartilage metabolism, facilitating repair processes. At the same time, it blocks the action of destructive enzymes that promote joint inflammation, break down the synovial fluid, and attack the cartilage. " It is awesome stuff.. we have our golden and lab on it (along with the Platinum CJ) they are so active and it is best if used preventatively... Sorry I could go on and on about this stuff.. |

Does Platinum? |
Or, maybe the 2 supps. are similar enough in their formulations to be comparable? Can you post Platinum's formulation - love to see it. :) |

Platinum Performance™ CJ is our our most comprehensive canine joint support product to date. In addition to the Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids and Antioxidants provided by Platinum Performance™ Canine Wellness formula, your dog will receive the joint protecting nutrients Glucosamine, MSM, Cetyl Myristoleate and Hyaluronic Acid to cushion and lubricate your dog’s joints. Platinum Performance™ CJ provides nutrients that support healthy joint function by targeting five primary contributors to development of joint health issues, namely: Chronic Inflammation Free Radical Damage Degradative Enzyme Activity Traumatic Injury Overuse Natural Aging Process Per Tablespoon (9.76g) Chondroprotective Glucosamine Sulfate 525mg Methylsulfonylmethane (OptiMSM™) 305mg Boswellia serrata Extract 30mg Cetyl Myristoleate 10mg Hyaluronic Acid 10mg There are also several joint supplements (these are comparable to Cosequin due to the fact there is a GUARANTEED amount, per tablespoon. Also due to the fact they are formulated to work in conjunction with one another and coupled with other variables that have been proven to work better when formulated as a group). The thing we like about the PP is the fact that the company stands behind their product, does continual research, offers consulting veterinarian/nutritionists and has been proven to work. It is only supposed to be sold through veterinarians, of course, there is always "leakage" but I wouldn't buy it through a website aside from their own because it does have expiration dates. Check out the website, Platinumperformance.com, and let me know what you think. I respect your opinion! The also offer numerous other veterinary formulas which is helpful in the clinic. |
