Paw itching Awhile back one of my Mini Schnauzers started chewing on her front feet. She was pretty obsessive about it. I checked them and could find nothing wrong. I even had the vet check them and he could find nothing wrong. Well my daughter has a Yorkie and she visited for about a week a short while ago and my daughter said she had started chewing at her feet also. Anybody have any clues as to what it might be. They eat different foods when she comes to visit and when she goes back home. I have hardwood floors, tile, and some carpet at my house. At my daughters she has only hardwood. I thought it might be something in the yard, but I have not put out fertilizer since April. Anybody else have any problems like this, Thanks David |
I had a yorkie that would chew on her feet. I figured it was something that she liked to do since none of my other yorkies chewed on their feet. You may have a vet do some testing on her. There is another thread of someone's yorkie that got mites on their feet. |
My yorkie did the same during pollen season and is now starting up again. Our vet said we could give him benadryl, but he is only 3.3 lbs. He is 16 month old. I dont want to medicate him. Vet said okay unless he eats away at his skin to make sores and he does not leave any sort of wound. Sometimes he jsut licks. I am not saying this is what is happening to your dogs...jsut our story. |
It is kind of odd. I have 2 Mini Schnauzers and only one chews on her feet. The Yorkie comes to visit and sometimes stays for a week or so at a time. The Yorkie is 5 and my 2 Mini's are 1-1/2 years old. The Yorkie has been visiting for many years and not had any problems until recently. They get frequent baths> at least every 2 weeks. Wonder what will kill mites? I might give them a foot soak in whatever would work and see if that helps. If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears, Thanks for the replys ,David |
paw chewing my new resue yorkie is also chewing his feet.I thought it was a bordem problem as he does it when he has no notice taken of him |

One of mine does this and the vet said it is due to allergies, kind of like us sneezing, they lick there feet. Benedryl should help. |
Oftentimes it's a food allergy too - have you ruled that out? What are you feeding? |
My dogs have been eating mainly Canidae ALS, then Evo red meat, Evo in a yellow bag, Orijen fish formula. They have been on a rotation of these foods since puppies. The Yorkie eats>some Canidae, some Orijen and Little Caesars(my daughter buys it for her and I tried to get her to stop). Thanks for the replies,I will continue to check them for all of the things yall mentioned. My other Mini doesn't chew on hers and she eats the same food(the 2 Mini Schnauzers are sisters)David |
I was just reading another post on itching and chewing. The lady said goose poop may have caused the problem in her dog. I do indeed occasionally have geese down at the dock and in the grass by the water(I live on a lake) The other day one of the Mini's was rolling in the grass at the dock and I stopped her and she had goose poop on her. That was 4 or 5 days ago, cause I had to give them a bath after that. Hmmm that is a possibility,(note to self>shoot all geese) David |
