Luxating Patella My dad emailed me this link today. The last time we talked that he had decided not to get his dog neutered because he had done some research online and had found that there are a LOT of cons to neutering your dog--much more, he thought, than the pros for the procedure. He never plans to allow him to sire a litter, but he decided the cons listed were not worth the pros, to him. I asked him about spaying, so he emailed me the link. The con I found most interesting is that studies have shown an increase risk for patellar luxation in neutered small and medium sized dogs (either gender). It jumped right out at me because that seems to be a common problem among Yorkies (I'm a new Yorkie owner, so I'm learning as I go!) So, my question is, for those of you that have dogs with patellar luxation.....are they neutered (either gender) or are they intact? I just thought a poll on here would be nice just for this one condition that Yorkies seem to be prone to anyway, just to see if there's anything to what these findings are saying. Should I spay or should I no... pros and cons of neutering |

Wow I just read in the pamphlet the vet gave me at it says there is a 3.1 fold higher risk of patellar luxation if you neuter you small breed dog |
My boyfriend just laughed at me because I was telling him about the patellar luxation risk being higher in neutered dogs, and I was wondering why aloud. I just thought, "you know, when a (human) woman has an ovariohysterectomy, they usually put her on hormone replacement therapy (HRT), one reason being to decrease her risk of osteoporosis. If lack of hormone production in women can cause bone loss, I'm sure there have to be things that are caused by a loss of hormone production in female dogs. A luxating patella would seem to fit in with something like that." He laughed at the thought of putting dogs on HRT....it is funny, but it does make you wonder a little bit why they don't?? Wouldn't that be the best of all the worlds? I know there are risks with hormones too, though, so maybe that's why.... Or the expense, but surgery is expensive too. Hmmmm.... |
Interesting. There are a LOT of cons to neutering (or maybe it is just that there really aren't that many pros) but people don't really seem to look at them. Spaying it seems that the benefit outweighs the risk but I think some caution has to be taken in large breed dogs if you spay before maturity. I had never heard of the LP connection though. |
Hmm, never heard of this before, but I do have an intact male (7 1/2 years old now) and he has LP (not sure of what stage, as thr vet just "felt" for it, but we are not at the surgery point yet. |
Bobby is not neutered yet..he will be next friday :( At the last vet visit the vet said he had stage 1 LP. |
xmasbaby75, thank you for replying to let us know about your intact male with LP. I'm sorry to hear it, but it's good to know that it very obviously can happen whether you neuter or not. It would be interesting to see how many others with LP are intact too, and if there are a lot, then it would seem Yorkies are at an increased risk whether they're neutered or not (which I suspect anyway, but would still like to know)--that stat just may not apply to them. Does anyone know if LP in Yorkies seem to favor one gender over another? (It sounds like I'm doing research doesn't it?! I guess I kind of am, just not in any official capacity....just for my own knowledge, and maybe others interested too.) |
Just wondering if it's possible to feel yourself if your dog has LP? Angel was diagnosed with a grade 1 LP in her hind legs this past year during her annual check up and I want to check myself if it's getting worse or not. |
brooklyn sky brooklyn at 9 months old started limping on her back right leg.then she started to not walk on it at all. we took her to the vet for x-rays and that is what she had.she had surgery 2 weeks ago at 10 months old and the vet said that it is from one of her parents having it. that her parents should of never had puppies. they had to remove her whole balljoint in her leg and they said that she would have to use her musel in her leg to walk. she is running and jumping on all four paws again so the sugery worked and she is just doing fine. the sugery was 1600.00 but it was well worth it. terryy brooklyns mommy |
wow, this is the first i have heard of this. I have heard it affecting the growth of larger breed dogs. It a way it makes sense.. |
