Why is my Yorkie Scratching all the time?
 
Just recently my baby, a 3 year old Yorkie, named Carmen started scratching and biting at herself all the time. I really noticed it right after we took her to the Vet to get fixed. I try to watch her all the time and not let her do that, but it's almost impossible to keep her from doing it. I've looked all over her for fleas and I haven't found a single one on her or anywhere else in our house. She is scratching and bite until her skin is red and irritated. Anyone have any suggestions on why she is doing this? And how I can help her feel better? We do not use Frontline or any medications like that. We use an herbal flea and tick prevention. We give her a bath once or twice a week and we use Dove Shampoo and Conditioner and we use a little Pantene Pro-V Conditioner. We have used this herbal flea spray and the same Shampoo and Conditioner the whole time we have had her and this hasn't been a problem until now. If anyone can help us that would be wonderful! I am kinda at a loss.

There are a lot of reasons she could have started doing this.

Have you switched foods recently or treats? That can cause a lot of scratching if the food is bothering them.

Kaba scratches a lot from mosquitoes...they are so bad in our yard and get her a lot...

hmmm....i know there are other reasons but I'm at a loss right now....

I'm sure you will get more posts as well...

when I got my baby he would scratch until he had sores. I tried different shampoos with no luck. Turned out with the help of everyone on this site, he was allergic to his food. He has to have a food with no corn, no wheat, no lamb, no by products. It is harder when picking out treats but it keeps him from scratching. He has been scratch free for about two years now.

An allergie would make a lot of sense. I'll have to look at her food when I get home from work to see what all it has in it. We haven't changed her food, but we do change her treats a lot (I feel like she will get bored with the treats, if we get her the same ones all the time). Lately we have been giving her the Greenies.

My husband thinks that maybe she is just acting out, but when I tell her to stop scratching and biting, she will continue to do it and usually if she's just acting out she will stop.

I have wondered the same thing. My 2yr. old Yorkie, Buddy always scratches, but just recently has been going crazy scratching all the time. The other one doesn't, so I'm beginning to think maybe it is something in his food too. They are so.......fussy though. I've been thru so many dog food in those 2yrs. with these guys. Any thoughts to a good food they might like?:confused: dbacior

It could very easily be a food allergy. And it is not unheard of for dogs to develope an allergy over time and become intolerable to things that they had no problems with in the past. Could also be dry or irritated skin. I would suggest for the time being that you use a very mild shampoo, like a childs conditioning shampoo when bathing her. Also, maybe supplement her diet with Flax Oil--it's great for dry skin (and eyes, and coat and several other things). If you've checked for fleas and there are no signs of them, I wouldn't worry about trying to treat her for them.

I was just concerned because it just started happening. Someone also suggested a Benadyl spray. We could easily change her food and treat and get her children's shampoo, but does anyone think it could be an allergy to anything else? Such as laundry detergent or something like that? I didn't know if dogs could be allergic to things like that....I am allergic to everything in the world....lol. If it's not her food, I guess we will find her something to help ease the allergies.

I would NOT suggest using any kind of spray...if it is going to sit on the skin and your dogs is scratching and biting and licking...:thumbdown Yes, I imagine that it could be something like detergeant that is driving her crazy. Why not? Maybe it was something she came in contact with at the vet's office? Or a lasting reaction to the anesthesia or post-op meds? Something that you are using to clean with in your house? Or that your yard has been treated with? Geez, if it's an allergy issue, it could be a wide range of things. I would start with the most obvious causes and go from there though.

I cant remember the name of the food I use ( I know that sounds stupid ) I have to go pick some up today so I will post it later. As far as treats Dusty loves anything from Zukes. They have no wheat, corn, soy, artificial colors, flavers, added fat or by products. They are fantastic. You can find them at pet stores or Zuke's – Healthy, Natural Treats for Dogs & Treats for Cats

I would definitely take a hard look at the ingredients in his food. Wheat, corn, byproducts and beef make my babies itch. I rotate feeding Nature's Variety raw venison and lamb medallions. And like ash0248 we feed Zukes, they also are wonderful products. And their free feed kibble right now, is Innova grain free. (They do get bored with their foods easily)

What kind of food does you baby eat? I didn't see that mentioned in the thread anywhere

I think maybe your right it's the food. Cuz, I don't know what else..although alot of the itching started after he was treated for fleas in ticks with K9 Advantage. Do you think that would make him scratch? My little 6lb yorkie seems just fine. But, I think I'll try the food 1st. and go from there. Thank you all for your help.

Sorry it took so long. I use Advanced Pet Diets Select Choice. It is a all natural & nutritionally complete food. They use human quality food with no corn, wheat, soy, or by products. They have different flavors like chicken,lamb and so on. Dusty loves it. It is the only thing that cleared up his problem and belive me I tried it all. I also use Arbonne shampoo (for humans ) or a baby shampoo then I add tea tree oil to the shampoo. I have used frontline for ticks but I think the natural tea tree oil work better and it is a lot safer. This is just what works for me. It is different with every pup as with every human. Good luck and I hope you find a solution soon.

I sell arbonne, NEVER thought to use the shampoo on him.... he has really dry skin! do you use the conditioner too? I assume you are using the shampoo w/tea tree oil?? thanks "D

I was using my conditioner on Cooper and he was scratching also. My vet told me not to use conditioner on him and it did help after I quit using it.

I use the self adjusting no tee tree in the shampoo. I dont use the conditioner but maybe once a month or so. Arbonne is the best, I sold it for a long time, now just use it. I like it because you dont have to stress about it getting it in their eyes.

EVERYTHING should be taken into consideration. Something is definatly affecting her. Could be food or treats. Could be detergent or fabric softner. Could be dust. Could be shampoo and / or conditioner or anything else that you might put on her.

My advice would be to change detergent to the free of everything kind, no more fabric softener, vacuum as much as you can, take a look at her food and treats, and DEFINATLY stop using human/child shampoo and NO conditioner, as they are probably leaving a residue on her skin - find a shampoo that is for dog/skin issues (The Coat Handler is one). She could also have a Yeast infection.

Thanks everyone for your advice. :thumbup: So, nobody thinks its the flee and tick meds? He gets that once a month. Where can I purchase what pet stores carry Advanced Pet Diet Select Choice and the Arbonne shampoo. We have a Petco, PetSmart, and Pet Supplies Plus, would any of those carry those products?

Our Laddy does this, what we have found helps the most is after his bath we mix half apple cider vinegar and water and rinse him with it and leave it to dry. He smells like a pickle for a bit but doesn't seem to scratch much at all afterwards.

Definitely consider your laundry detergent too if you are putting clothes on your baby. I recently went back to Tide and noticed Harley scratching and thought it was strange as I didn't change food, treats or shampoo. Since she is only 5 months we keep things pretty consistent. I am going to try a "free" detergent and see if that works
