Things to know before purchasing... I am looking at getting a 13 week old male yorkie. This will be our first time having a new puppy and I want to make sure I do everything that I should do for the pup. What shots and vet visits should he have had at this point, and what are the shots and vet visits I should expect to take him for over the next year? Sorry that I seem a little clueless, I just don't know what all shots they need and when, and I want to make sure I get them for him. Thanks! |
We are first time puppy owners as well, so I understand your nervousness! We picked our little girl up last week when she was 12 weeks old, and she had three of her four puppy shots (I don't remember what they are, but I think distemper and parvo vaccinations are part of them). She'll be going back to see her vet at 16 weeks for her rabies, then a couple weeks later we'll go back for her 4th puppy shot. She was also microchipped when we got her. You might also want to do a search for puppy vaccinations or shots--I know there have been some good threads in the past about what a breeder should provide. Good luck! |
My husband and I brought our fur baby home when he was 13 weeks old. Our baby came with all shots up to date and we were given two days to take him for an exam to our vet. From there on he was and is our responsibility and we are fully responsible for our puppy's well being. Your vet (if he/she is a competent doctor) knows what shots and when the puppy needs them - don't worry about that. When you pick him up have in your purse NutriCal, Kyro Syrup. The breeder should give you a list of things you need to bring for your little puppy. If not there is a sticky here with all the things you need to have with you as new parent. Congrats on your new addition to your family. |
One more thing... I forgot to add that our breeder sent us home with a record of all the shots/treatments her vet had administered with dates, which was really helpful for our vet when we took Ella for her wellness check-up. If you aren't given something like that, I'd ask for it. |
This may sound like a dumb, duh question, but so we should take him to the vet within the first few days of getting him then is what it sounds like? Because he will be due for another shot. We don't have a vet yet as we don't have another other pets (well we have a caged leopard geoko but that doesn't count for that lol) should we go ahead and schedule a new puppy visit or something like that as soon as we know if/when we are going to purchase him? Any clues (or other threads) about how much the 4th puppy shot (which sounds like what I'll need to get him) and the vet visit cost. I realize it varies for every area, but just a round about range just so I have an idea. Sorry I'm new to this :) |

This is was was required from us to bring when picking up our puppy: # Nutri-Cal or Nutri-Stat # Baby wipes or damp paper towels and a dry towel # Fresh newspaper for the crate # Garbage bag or plastic bag for soiled newspaper # Bottled water and some treats or food # Leash and collar There is a sticky for new parents in Gerneral Disscution here on the website. I hope this helps a little bit. |
Going to be a new mommy My family and I have found a breeder in Minnesota. But before I send a deposit to hold my new baby boy, how do I find out if she is okay? I don't want to get my heart broken:( |

Did you ever buy the puppy from the breeder in Minnesota? I live in MN too and was just curious. I'm doing some research on finding a good breeder. I have a deposit down on a puppy from a place in near Princton/Milaca)but I'm not too sure if I'm going with that puppy for sure yet. I too don't want to get my heart broken :( Thanks! :D |
