# of bowel movements per day?? How many bowel movements per day does your Yorkie average (or did they when they were a puppy?) Bella is 4 mo. old, and I switched her to Wellness Puppy last week, which she seems to like, but she she seems to have even more bowel movements now than she did before. For example, yesterday she had 6 or 7 bowel movements (over a 24 hr. period) and she only ate maybe 1/4 c. of food. That's about all she eats ever, even when she was on PurinaOne Puppy--sometimes closer to 1/3 c. And I do give her treats everytime she potties in the right place (and I'm home to give her one), but they're just small training treats--Bil Jac ones that I've cut in half because I think those are still too big for her! Sometimes I give her other treats, but in the past couple of days all she gets is one Iams Puppy biscuit (I've been reading about that company and am getting ready to switch to Old Mother Hubbard instead) when we leave her for a few hours (just one a day though) and 1/2 a Bil Jac training treat (Liver, I think?) when she potties in the right place. She always had several bowel movements a day with the PurinaOne, maybe 2-4 just as a guess, but 6-7 times a day just seems like a LOT...like maybe too much!! I thought I was switching her to a better quality food so there would be less waste, not more! |
Hot Rod is a year old and he potties usually potties 2x and Maggie is 15 weeks goes 2x maybe 3 x. I have them on Innova. |
Wellness is a good brand, so I would stick to that. Her poops are a combo of the food, cookies and treats. I would think the liver treats may be a little rich, causing her to need to poop  Also, I think all dogs are different and I don't really think that 'better' kibble means less poop. When mine were pups, yes they pooped about 5 x a day. Now they are almost 4 y/o - Roxy gets special food b/c of her liver issues, it's home cooked, human food, mostly veggies, fruit and cheese - WELL, she poops HUGE and I mean HUGE logs of poop 3 times a day  TJ is on a Raw food diet, he can also poop 3 times a day, but they are tiny little bitty poops, like cig. butts :p I think she is ok with what you are doing, as she gets older, the amount of time will go down ;) |
Since you just switched her from a poor quality food, she could be going through a major detox. I'd give her a couple weeks for her system to normalize. If after a few weeks of being on the new food, you're still seeing this - then there may be something in the new food that she's sensitive to. |

Thanks for the advice to give it a few weeks! I will.....and maybe it is just a detox. That seems to me a better reason than the treats (although maybe the liver ones AREN'T a good idea??), because I can't imagine that a dog that only goes twice a day didn't get any treats at all, but maybe so. I like giving her treats, but in MODERATION! Thank you for your help!!! I'll post again if/when things change.... |

Wall-E is on Wellness just for puppy too. I'm slowly transitioning him from Pet Promise which is what he was on (I'm doing 1/2mix right now). With Pet Promise he was going once a day, but now he poops 2 times a day consistently- once in the morning and once in the evening. I also give him treats each time he poops outside and also in the morning I fill his kong with treats and a tiny bit of baby food... maybe once he eats Wellness by itself he will poop even more too! we'll see... |
Just in case anyone is wondering, it looks like we're down to ~4 times a day now. Still sounds like a lot to me, but that's a LOT less than before, so I'm happy! Also, I visited my dad this weekend and his dog (Buddy--Boston/Rat Terrier mix) ate a lot of Bella's food. I had already told my dad about Bella going a lot more now that I've switched foods, so he made sure to tell me that Buddy went a LOT more than he usually does and that it wasn't as solid as usual. So we're both sold on the detoxing theory! (He had already been thinking about switching Buddy to Wellness, and Buddy seems to like it so I'd say it's a go!!) Thanks for your advice! |
