Cosequin - for under 10 lbs. - what's your regimen? So, I've started Wylie (my 4 yr. old) on his Cosequin. The ramp-up dosage for 6 weeks is 1/2 capsule per day. Then for the maintenance dose, for dogs under 10 lbs., you have a choice of either going to 1/2 capsule per day OR to 1/2 capsule every OTHER day, based upon the dog's "comfort/relief level". Well, Wylie has never had/shown any pain/discomfort whatsoever in his knees, so I'll have no real way of knowing which dose is therapeutic for him. For those of you giving Cosequin - which dosage are you giving for maintenance - every day or every other day? |
Huh, I thought it was 1 (not 1/2) everyday for 6 weeks then maintenance is 1/2 every day or 1 every other day. I will probably go with 1 every other day for maintenance only because I don't want to split the capsules in half and save half somewhere for the next day but that could chance.:) If Ellie's cracking doesn't improve I will probably go to 1 every day for maintenance (clearing it with the vet first) because I think one site said you can. |
I read the label and it says 1/2 -1 capsule per day for dogs under ten pounds. Since Lady has bad arthritis, I give her one capsule a day. It has really helped. |
i just started Tumi and Gracie on Cosequin also. they each get half a tab per day. I also have Tsubi on Glycoflex II as a preventative. |
We just started this for Willow our Pom and she is 19 lbs but the vet has her on 1 a day for 4 weeks then 1/2 one everyday after that. We do see a difference though. She was to the point of using her back left leg maybe 25% of the time and for the last week sh has been using it 100% of the time. |
From Vet America: Cosequin (Regular Strength) Small Dogs (Initial Administration 6 Weeks ) Under 10 lb.: 1/2 to 1 capsule daily 10-24 lb.: 2 capsules daily (1 in A.M./ 1 in P.M.) Maintenance Administration (After initial 6 week period ) Cats and dogs under 10 lb. can often have their dosage reduced to 1/2 capsule daily or 1 capsule every other day. 10 to 24 lb. can often have their dosage reduced to 1 capsule daily. Wylie's been having some stool issues the past few days. Did anyone else see that for awhile after starting Cosequin? :( |
Just got mine in the mail. They are capsules, how do you feed them to the Raw Eaters  |
GI upset is the only side effect.:( I was just looking on Google and there is a product that Nutramax makes that is very similar to Cosequin. If GI upset occurs after starting it (within a week), you can either try giving it with food or starting with a lower dose for the first 7-10 days. I think the same would apply to Cosequin. |

It's not terrible, as in diarrhea, but it's mushy - then worse at the end; and he's never like this. 3 days now :(. Maybe I'll add some fiber/probio for support. He has a tummy/system of steel (unlike Marcel) - so I'm surprised it's had this effect. I so want this supp. for his little knees! |

How about SynoviG3 or Glycoflex...no known side effects just under studied. Some ortho surgeons like Synovi though. |

we have glycoflex for Avie. then we started trying K9 liquid health (glucosamine & ha) (it is liquid.. we put it on her food-she loves the taste of it!) we haven't been using it long enough to see results.. but hope it works! we are interested in cosequin, as well! ;) we were going to get this.. then i ended up picking some of the liquid health at our feed store! if it doesn't work-we will be ordering the cosequin! would love to hear more feedback! ;) |
