How much do I feed a 12 week old? You yorkie lovers seem to know everything! On the puppy food it says 1/4 cup. Does that mean once a day or twice a day? 1/4 cup in all or 1/2 cup in all? Thanks! And please forgive my stupidity. |
hehe welcome to Yt..glad you found us...hopefully someone can offer some assistants...for i free feed..hehe |
My trixie let me know. When she came home, I gave her the vitamines. She will not eat the first two days. Then the third day. She ate a handful in the morning, and a handful at night. That is it. She stops when she is full. So for my trixie, is a handful in the morning, and a handful at night. I do leave the bowl with some food, but she wont touch it. Yorkies don't eat as much as other dogs |
suki is the same as above. plus this helps with not pooping in her crate at night. ill pick it up about 730 at night. |
Since the package isn't in front of me I really can't say for sure but usually that means that is the amount that should be given per day. You can't always trust what the company says to give though. All dogs are different. Yorkie puppies should be fed at least 3-4 times a day. |
Joey's breeder recommended free feeding till the age of 8 months. Tiny dogs can use up their calorie reserves rather quickly so food should be available 24/7. Many people give Nutri-Cal, which is mainly sugar, but this can decrease the appetite for more nutritious food, and a better option, I believe, is to have food available at all times. The amount on the bag is usually the daily amount. Nutri-Cal does have it's place, but only if the dog is experiencing hypoglycemic systems and shouldn't be given as a "preventive." |
Thanks for the above replies! Can I ask what you give as reward for a puppy that young? What kind of treats do they have that are tiny? I was told to give Cheerios. |
i give wellness brand puppy treats. usually 1/2 of one. there are so many, i give also bully sticks. you'll love these , they give you time alone. lol |
Sam has always been free fed. Treat wise when he was that little.... I let him have a bully stick every so often, a few cheerios, a few honeycombs.... also in the baby section at WalMart they sell those Sweet Potato puffs... Sam LOVES those!!! |
Is there anyone that doesn't free feed? Or is that what is mainly done with smaller dogs? |
what's abully stick? |

I usually free feed, but Shadow will keep on eating! |
I free feed Suzi. She only eats so much and is fine. Yorkie's have very small stomachs and only can eat so much at a time. Find a high quality puppy food and always have fresh water for her to drink. :aimeeyork |

Free feeding is fine if your pup doesn't overeat. Then again, as long as you are offereing food often enough you don't need to free feed. |
OK so I tried to just give him 1/4 a cup yesterday and there is NO way that is enough for him. I spread it out over the day. 1/4 cup is not even a full dixie cup (the small ones.) He only poops 2x a day, but anytime I put food in there he eats it. Would it be bad to give him closer to 1/2 cup a day? I don't want to make him overweight but we play with him so much that I'm sure he burns a lot of it off. For the free feeders, do you just fill the bowl? I think Jax would over eat if I did that. I measured out the food and put a little in his bowl at a time. I think he'd make himself sick little piggy if I filled his bowl. |
If a human being can eat it why not a dog? In some third worl contries, this is a delicacy. In some, is given to inmates. (bull's privates). They do like it. |

He goes to the vet on Monday so I will get an accurate weight then, but he's somewhere around 3lbs. I just gave him his first treat and it was fairly big, he ate the whole thing!!! I came back to the kitchen and was shocked. ha He is going to have to attend OEA! ha |

For free feeders I would put 1/4 cup of food in the morning and check the bowl, and add another 1/4 cup when that got low. Don't worry about puppy getting fat. They grow in spurts, and some days will require more food than others. He's burning most of the calories threw growing, and making teeth and bones, and all the playing you do with him burns calories. As long as you don't give to many treats, you don't need to worry about this. I personally don't give many treats because even the healthy ones aren't that good for them, and can ruin their appetite for their regular food. I don't consider Bully Sticks a treat. I consider it a chew toy. It takes Joey a week to consume a 6-inch Bully Stick, and it's really great for keeping teeth and gums healthy. |
My Buster is 6 months old and has been VERY active outside recently chasing squirrels, protecting the yard. I think he has been using up so much energy and this might explain why he seems to be so hungry - he has been eating 1/3 cup of Wellness pretty regularly but last night he starting licking everything in sight. I realized he was hungry! I gave him more food and he gobbled it up. I'm going to offer him 1/2 cup today. Could this be caused by his hormones kicking in? He is getting neutered next week. How do you think he'll change? |
