Deafness in yorkies Hi newbie here:), I will be collecting a rescued 8+ yorkie male at the weekend and have been told he is deaf. Any ideas what could have caused this?. As far as I know no vet has looked into his ears. Do yorkies have to have some hairs removed from their ears sometimes?. Seems to ring a bell. BTW Ive had rescued dogs for over 43 yrs, but never a yorkie. |
I'm sorry that I do not have any answers about this....Just wanted to tell you.... Welcome to YorkieTalk. Hopefully, someone here will know something. |
Welcome to YT! How wonderful of you to have been rescuing for 43 years! Thats amazing!! Inspires me to get a rescue next time we decide to have an addition to the family! I don't have experience with deaf yorkies/dogs, so not much help here! I hope someone replies who has experience with this! I don't think their hair in their ears have anything to do with it. It sounds more of a birth issue or a accidental issue. As we all know when one of your senses is down, you get more sharp on your other senses like your sight, smell and touch. So you will have to accomodate and make use of that. Please keep us updated and share pics too, we love pics here:) |
Ok thanks, will get vet to check his ears when I get him. He also has sight probs, apparantly.:) |
welcome, i just want to say that there should be more people in the world like you... your amazing.. |
I have had 2 yorkies that went deaf and mostly blind. My first Yorkie, Molly, who passed already went completely deaf and almost completely blind. Her daughter, Mindy who I have now is completely deaf and going blind. It is a challenge but hopefully this dog will recognize hand signals and hasn't been deaf his whole life. Mindy responds to had signals and until her sight goes she should do O.K. Both of my girls had Cushings Disease and I don't know if that is what made them deaf but they both got ear infections a lot and their ear canals got badly scarred and narrow. Good Luck with your guy and I really respect you giving him a chance!! Bravo!! |
Thanks. I will get him checked out by my vet next tues. Its a bank holiday weekend when I see him for the first time. So I will be back to having 3 dogs in my home!:). |
