Kennel cough? TeeJay was slighty congested and coughed a few times during the night when I first got him. The vet prescribed tussin (cough suppressant) and an antibiotic for him. Well this was over a month ago and TeeJay had finished both medications in about a week. The problem is that TeeJay is still coughing at night and it almost sounds like he's choking now. I took him to the vet again a few days ago and she prescribed the same thing to him (the tussin and antibiotic which he is still on) and said he had kennel cough. My question is, why wasnt he healed the first time when we gave him the medication and how long does kennel cough last for? Any input on this topic would be greatly appreciated. |
From what ive read kennel cough can last a little while. It just needs to run its course but it could be a month or more even. |
kennel cough is a virus...... the bacteria that couse it can die and the cough can last up to 4 months (this is an extreme case..... ) my baby had kennel cough too and it lasted about a month and a half, i didnt get any antibiotics for him though, the vet decided it was mild enough to just run its course and i was also told that if given teh antibiotics the cough would last longer (i dunno why? does anyone know the truth on that one????) i just used plain childrens robitussin for toby |
my coworker told me that he probably got it from other dogs when i had him groomed. i remember when i took him home that day, he threw up and seemed very lethargic. i'm a bit worried because now that i think of it, his cough was mild when we first got him but now it's worsened since the grooming experience. i'm so clueless on what to do now. i'm always waking up in the middle of night to his hacking and i want to just cry whenever i hear him suffering. |
yeah, the nights are tough......... they can get it anywhere if there is a large number of dogs in a confined area with the right kind of bacteria in the environment... most prominant among them is the groomer, the vet, and a kennel (hence teh name kennel cough)...... it is more or less equivalent to the human flu, i hope youre guy feels better..... one thing that i did was take toby in the bathroom while iw as takeing a shower (sort of like a home humidifier) or if you actually HAVE a humidifier that would be GREAT....... |
We had a similar experience with Teddy when we first got him. I had the pup to the vet on a daily basis for the first month I think and we tried everything and still it was that same little choking cough every night and early morning. They finally put him on a steriod to help clear out his lungs and that seemed to do the trick. We have since not had the problem again so I don't know if this would pertain to you but you might just ask. |
Thank you sooo much. This is really helpful and i'm more at ease from hearing your input. i am definitely going to call my vet and see if they can do a little bit more to help my baby. thanks again! |
I a pro at this Both of my dogs had this. Ruby my yorkie had it from the time i bought her which she was 8 weeks old up until a few weeks ago which now she is 5 months old. Now my pom Valentino has it. It takes lots of time to get rid of this and you must be persistent and dedicated with the meds. Just don't give up and slowly but surely he should get better. Hope this helps. :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 |
I recommend that once he is totally well you get him vaccinated if you are going to be taking him to areas where there are a lot of other dogs! The vaccine for kennel cough is not 100%, it is like a flu shot for people but it helps a lot. Bruce loves to be with and is with a lot of other dogs all the time, and has yet to catch it. |
I went through the same thing, Pebbles had it from the time I got her to when she was five months old. I thought it would never stop. My vet never gave her anything because he said there was really nothing for it. He told me to use the humidifier at night. The same way it came it left. Thank God! |
