Garlic? Is garlic safe for our furbabies? I have seen several treat recipes that call for garlic but I also see where it's not safe for them? Anyone know for sure? Thanks! |
Garlic got a bad name because it's a member of the onion family and onions are bad for dogs. You can safely use garlic in small amounts. I read that it would take a whole bottle of garlic powder to make the average dog sick. Many who say it has healthy properties highly recommend garlic. It is in various dog foods, snacks, and my vet recommended sprinkling some on food when a dog was sick to stimulate the appetite. Dogs love the smell. |
Thanks for the reply. I made them some treats yesterday and then I got to searching online about garlic, some said it was safe, some did not. They are loving the treats though :D |
I asked our vet about this also because we have society garlic plants in the backyard that the puppy likes to chew on, she said it was perfectly fine and that it may keep fleas at bay. |
I found that most recipes were bad in other ways, try to be careful with fats, one recipe I read used a large portion of bacon fat, dogs would love it to be sure, but most can't handle fat that well. Also dogs don't have that many taste buds compared to humans, so sugar isn't necessary either, and salt is another big no no. Dog's "taste" through smelling. |
Whether garlic should be given to dogs will probably be debated forever. I do not give it and don't recommend giving it. Members of the allium (onion, garlic, leek, chives) family can permanently denature hemogloblin because they are toxic to red blood cells. Feeding a small amount of garlic occasionally isn't really going to do anything but feeding a large amount one time or a small amound over a long period of time could create a problem. Most dogs will probably do fine but asthmatic attacks, dermatitis and anemia have been reported in relation to animals consuming garlic. If I had to feed Ellie garlic, I would have her RBCs checked often but there is no reason, in my opinion, to take the chance anyway. You can learn about this at petdiets.com. You can search in the FAQ for this info. There is also an article about it on there but it is not free. |
