spay stay overnight? I know that when males get neutered they don't have to stay over night, but do females? My vet wants my girl to stay, but I hate the thought of her in pain all alone. They aren't a 24 hour facility, so I need to see if anyone will even be there at night.what do you guys think? |
All of my female animals (cats and dogs) have stayed overnight with their spay. The vets won't leave them alone if they are not stable. They give them pain meds right before they leave at night so they are quiet and sleep all night and don't eat or drink before they should. I know it is hard to think of them alone all night, but it is for the best that they stay confined and quiet. My vet said 99.9% of the time after any surgery all is fine. You can arrange to transport your baby to a 24 hour facility that evening, then pick her up and bring her back to your vet in the morning if you want. There will be additional expense with this. Now that I think about it, my male cats all had overnight stays after their neuters as well. |
I had one of mine stay overnight and one come back home. Do you have other dogs that might play to rough with her. If so I'd opt for the overnight. My vet has someone stay at night even though they're not open. |
She is my only dog now, so there would be no rough play. I'll be fine with her staying as long as someone is there at night. Otherwise, I feel like I should go else where. The Vet wants to get the spay done ASAP because they are afraid she will have her 1st heat soon. |
My girl came home the night of the surgery. If no ones there I would just tell them your taking her home You may have to sign a waiver |
Bella went in around 8:00. I was able to pick her up by 4:30. She was fine being @home, in my arms, of course. I wonder why some vets want to keep over nite too? Is she very small? I would ask the vet about bringing her home & why they want to keep her there. Good Luck with whatever you decide.;) |
Layla came home. She went in at 8 and I got to pick her up at 6. She did not come home with pain meds but was so drowsy from the meds she slept for the next 3 days. I wouldn't be able to have left her if there was no one there with her... she would have been too upset and so would I. i would feel better knowing I could be up all night to watch her. (which i was :p ) |
Roxie goes Wednesday to get spayed and they want to keep her overnight with no one there. I told the girl I was not leaving her she said the vet said if she felt Roxie was ok to go home I could take her and sign a waiver. If not she had to stay. There is no way I will let her stay unattended all night. I will transfer her to the 24 hr er if she isn't doing well enough to come home. I will keep her in a crate and stay up all night with her. I am 7 minutes away from the er vet so if there was a problem I could get her there. |
When Gypsy was spayed she went in at 7 30 am and we picked her up about 5 pm. She did fine. Slept most of the night and next day. We are about to go through it again with our chi and I am nervous about it even though I think it will be fine. |
I don't think it is okay to leave any dog alone after surgery. Most will do fine but it is not worth the risk. If you want her to stay, I would find a vet that has somebody there with them. Ellie came home a few hours after her spay and liver biopsy and she was okay. I stayed up all night with her though. |
My 7 yr old rescue was spayed a few months ago and I posted here about this too because my vet did keep her overnight and there was no one there. I was so upset when I realized this. Actually she even had more than spaying, she had 3 mammary tumors removed also. When I realized that no one planned on staying with her, I called the vet and asked if I had other options. The person I spoke to is a casual friend who attempted to reassure me and I ended up feeling stupid for worrying. Of course, later when i was at home and the vet was closed, I worried all night about her. She was fine but I will never leave my dogs alone again. For minor day to day things, I will continue with the vet that did the surgery, I like him and he is 5 minutes away from my house. However, for any surgery, I will go to a vet that has 24 hr care. |
I just had my two little guys neutered a couple of weeks ago. My vet usually keeps both boys and girls overnight and there is no one there after hours. My little girl just turned a year old in July. I have not had her spayed yet, and this is one of the reasons why. When I had the boys done my vet told me that he would recommend they stay, but I could take them home the same day if I wanted. When I went in the tech kinda acted smart with me, she said that she had left her own puppy there for its own well being after being spayed. I told her that having a key to the building and the ability to check in any time during the night may be more reassuring to her, but I did not see how it could be for their best interest to be here all alone, scared, and in pain instead of home with me? She gave me the look, then went and collected my babies for me. They did fine, here with me. I am so undecided about my little girl. She is soo tiny. There is no way I will let her stay there overnight alone. The tech told me that the spays had to stay over night no matter what. I have not discussed this with my vet yet, but if that policy is written in stone. I'll go elsewhere. Good luck with your baby. |
My vet usually keeps spays/neuters over night, but I've been going to her for a long time and she is confident in the care my dogs get, so I bring mine home the same day. There is no one there over night. My dogs have never had a problem. There is an emergency vet I could get to if there was a problem. I did let my little rescue Chihuahua stay over night. It was a whole different situation with her. She was so scared and new to me, so I couldn't offer her any comfort at that point. She was better off being sedated and just sleeping all night. I didn't sleep that night and worried and worried about her. She did fine and I was there when they opened the next morning to bring her home. My vet went back to the office to check on her very late that night, after midnight, which was sweet of her. She knew how worried I was and she wanted to be sure my little one was OK. I have a great vet who really cares about the animals. |
Bella did not stay. SHe was there from 8 am to 5 pm. |
Grayson had to stay overnight when he got neutered. He did fine but they wanted to monitor him. I had to take him back though because his pain meds weren't working poor baby would shake and cry. |
